The Computer Commons Lab - On Campus
About - The lab is located in the Library and Academic Resource Center (LARC), Room 234, on the second floor, above the library. As one of the four areas that make up the Academic Resource Center, the Computer Commons is an open computer lab, designed to support Valley College students’ academic needs. The lab offers a wide variety of software, internet access, printing, scanning, and copy services.
Equipment - The lab has 95 computers with Windows 10, and two iMac stations. Headphones and flash drives can be borrowed with your student ID card. Due to Covid-19 public health restrictions, we are only allowing half the computers to be used. We are also only allowing use of one of our group study rooms, and for only one or two people from different households. Students can print up to 10 pages per day at no charge, and make copies in black and white for 10 cents a page *(We're looking forward to transitioning to a new pay for print system). A high resolution scanner is also available for use in the lab.
Policy - To use the Computer Commons, students must be enrolled at LAVC in the current semester and have an LACCD student email address. Food and drink are not allowed in the lab. Children are not permitted entry to the Computer Commons lab, but the LAVC Family Resource Center does allow children with their LAVC student-parents at their Kid-Friendly Study Lounge, and they have four Mac computers with a printer. Check their website for details.
Assistance - Dedicated Computer Commons Help Desk staff are available to assist students with the use of computers, printing, scanning, and academic software. The Help Desk staff are not allowed to tutor students, assist with personal, non-college related business, or handle students' personal devices.
Employment - If you're interested in joining our staff as a student worker, a volunteer or through the Federal Work Study program, please contact Rob at the Help Desk, Monday through Friday between 9 am and 2 pm, or via email. You can also use this application submission form.
