INFORMATION FOR CONTINUING CalWORKs STUDENTS:
REMINDER!! Due to the high volume of documents and limited staff, all forms take at least 5 to 7 business days to process. Book requests may take longer to process, especially during the rush period. Submit your forms as soon as you get them from your GAIN Service Worker or CCRC.
Checklist for students:
- Student Educational Plan - In order for CalWORKs students to be eligible for PRIORITY REGISTRATION, all CalWORKs students must have a Student Educational Plan on file. Schedule an appointment with a Counselor to develop your educational plan!
- Verification of Eligibility - Provide the CalWORKs office with a "Verification of Benefits" or a "Notice of Action" letter indicating your eligibility for cash aid benefits dated at least four weeks within the start date of courses. You may also print your "Verification of Benefits" by accessing LA DPSS self-service website Your Benefits NOW (YBN). https://dpssbenefits.lacounty.gov/ybn/Index.html. - Process your Textbook Request Worksheet [PDF: 249KB] early in the semester. This worksheet is available in our office or by Clicking HERE[PDF: 249KB]. Attach all necessary documents such as "verification of benefits", course syllabus, educational plan, etc... Turn this worksheet to our office and allow 4-6 business days for processing. Visit www.lavcbookstore.com to find required textbooks for your courses.
Email your completed request to CalWORKs@lavc.edu - Sign and indicate your student ID # on all forms. Monthly Activity Report (GN6365), Progress Report (GN6070), and Training Verification (GN6006, 6005A, STA-20). Please allow at least 4 to 6 business days for processing.

- Attend CalWORKs Workshops. We are offering informative workshops for CalWORKs students. Students must attend at least two workshops within the semester to be eligible to apply for CalWORKs work-study. Workshops are conducted virtually via Zoom. Email calworks@lavc.edu to RSVP for any of the workshops
- Apply for CalWORKs Work-study. CalWORKs Work Study program is designed for CalWORKs students to gain knowledge of work experience and training while taking courses. Income earned through CalWORKs work-study does not count against cash aid benefits. Positions assigned can be on or off campus. The annual application period is from July to August.
You must adhere to the following criteria to apply:
- Actively receiving cash aid for yourself, spouse (if applicable), and child(ren).
- Be in good standing with the DPSS CalWORKs/GAIN Program.
- Completed at least one academic semester at LAVC and a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Must attend at least two workshops within the semester to be eligible to apply.
- Have a Student Educational Plan (developed with Academic Counselor) on file with CalWORKs.
- Enrolled in at least 6 qualifying units of classes towards your Student Educational Plan (SEP) each semester.
- Successful completion of English 101.
- Students enrolled in REM/ESL components are not eligible for CalWORKs Work-Study at this time.
- Have strong computer skills.
- Have strong communication and organizational skills.

ALL STUDENTS ARE ADVISED TO APPLY FOR A "CALIFORNIA COLLEGE PROMISE GRANT (Formerly known as the Board of Governors (BOG) Fee Waiver)" OR FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Get tutoring assistance!
Free online tutoring is available through NetTutor. Students can access NetTutor through Canvas or the SIS portal. For more information, visit the LAVC Academic Resource Center's NetTutor webpage.
ONLINE LIBRARY SERVICES AND RESOURCES
The LAVC Library is now providing online research assistance and online access to a great variety of research materials including ebooks, articles, movies, tutorials, and more. Librarians will be available via email Monday–Friday* and 24/7 via real-time chat to help students, faculty, and staff find what they need. Visit Ask a Librarian for more info.
