Steps To Assess


Steps to taking the assessment/placement at Valley College:

  • STEP 1:  If you are planning to assess in ESL English at Valley, you must apply to Los Angeles Valley College prior to assessing (this includes students who have applied to other colleges in the LACCD) If you have not applied to Valley College, please go to the online application page.


  • STEP 2: Once you receive confirmation that your application has been processed and you have received an email with your Student ID #, you may assess.
    • You can either call or walk-in to make an appointment. Please see the office phone number and hours of operation. If you leave a message, please remember to include your name, student ID number, phone number, and the best time to call you back. 
    • You must bring a VALID picture ID (driver's license, passport, student ID) to assess. No Exceptions.
    • Sample tests are available on this website.
    • The assessment is only offered on the computer.
    • If you have children, please arrange for a babysitter. Children are not permitted to sit with the parent during the assessment.
    • The assessment is NOT TIMED. It is approximately 45 minutes to one hour for each test.
    • You may stop and save your assessment at anytime and have 2 weeks to return and continue.
    • Cell phones, calculators and other study guides are not allowed during the assessment. You will be asked to put them in a locker.
    • RE-TESTS ARE NOT PERMITTED.  Please see the Re-test Policy.


  • STEP 3: Results are available immediately after you complete your assessment. You can also find your results on the Student Information System.


  • STEP 4: After you get your results, you will be able to make an appointment for a First Semester Planning session with a counselor. You will also be informed that you should complete the online Orientation.
