NEW STUDENTS


IF YOU ARE A NEW OR RETURNING STUDENT VETERAN (DEPENDENTS INCLUDED), PLEASE FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

Returning students are students who have not attended LAVC for 2 or more semesters (fall and spring)

Apply to become a student at LA Valley College using this link - LAVC Application

Make an appointment with the Veterans Counselor to receive the New Student Veterans Orientation (NSVO) using this link - NSVO Counseling Appointment

Starting spring 2021, all new student veterans AND returning students at LAVC must complete the NSVO

Attend the New Student Veterans Orientation with the Veterans Counselor

  • During the NSVO, you will:

    • Learn about VA Certification process and requirements

    • Learn about academic planning and veterans services

    • Receive an abbreviated student educational plan (SEP) for your first two semesters at LAVC

Register for classes online through your Student Portal

  • If you plan on using your VA educational beenfits, enrolled classes must be listed on your SEP to receive VA certification
  • Use your SEP to help you choose your classes. To access your SEP, go to MyCollege.laccd.edu > Manage Classes > Student Educational Plan > Current Counselor SEP on File

Add the LAVC Veterans Services course to your Canvas (Canvas is the learning management system utilized by LAVC )

  • During the NSVO, you will receive a link to add the LAVC Veterans Services course in Canvas
  • By adding LAVC Veterans Services to your Canvas, you will be able to access important information related to VA certification, announcements and updates, and other services
  • After you’ve added the Canvas course, you can access this by going to your student portal online at MyCollege.laccd.edu > Canvas

IMPORTANT NOTE: AFTER you have attended the NSVO AND registered for classes, you can use the link and add the course. Adding the course before enrollment will result in an error message.

If you are using VA educational benefits, complete the New Students module in Canvas and submit your VA Certification Form

  • At the end of the New Students module, you will be given a link to submit the Certifcation Request Form for your VA benefits
  • when submitting your form, please have the following documents ready to upload:
    • Eligibility Letter provided by the VA
    • Military Credit Petition provided in the NSVO
    • Copy of DD-214 (Member 4) - Eligible to receive two units of Health credit, one unit of Kinesiology credit and three units of elective credit for the AA/AS degree, an exemption and partial certification for the CSU General Education Plan Area E (Lifelong Learning and Self Development)
    • Copy of an ID (i.e. CA driver's license, VA card, LAVC student id card)
  • other requirements include:
    • updated Student Educational Plan (SEP) provided by the counselor. NOTE: Classes not on your SEP will not be certified unless approved by the veterans counselor
    • Veteran's file number or copy of veteran's DD-214 (for Chapter 35 Dependents)
    • Tungsten Authorization (for Chapter 31VR&E formerly known as Vocational Rehabilitation) provided by the VR&E Rehabilitation Counselor

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students must complete the New Students module to receive access to the Certification Form Partial paperwork will NOT be accepted.

Schedule a follow-up appointment with the LAVC Veterans Counselor to review and update your student educational plan (SEP)
