English Instruction

As a cohort (a small group of about 25 people), Puente students take English 101 (Fall) and English 103 (Spring). These classes are taught by Holly Batty, who is interested in Latinx culture and literature. Students develop their writing skills in a supportive and stimulating environment while exploring Latinx authors and writing themes that deal with issues such as immigration, social justice, and student equity.

The Fall 2020 English 101 course (which will be taught online) is still open. You will need a permission number to enroll, which we will provide after you have submitted an application to join the Puente Program.

The following books are examples of some of the required reading for the Puente English courses:

Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario

The Beautiful Struggle by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Still Wayer Saints by Alex Espinoza
