Virtual Recognition 2020 Ceremony Update

Dear Graduate and Candidate for Graduation,

Los Angeles Valley College invites you to its 2020 Virtual Recognition Ceremony that will take place on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. on Facebook and YouTube.

This Virtual Recognition Ceremony is optional and does not replace the in-person ceremony. Class of 2020 graduates will be invited to LAVC's in-person ceremony in 2021, so that our graduates will have the opportunity to fully participate in a traditional Commencement exercise. 

Fall 2019 Graduates and Spring 2020 Candidates for Graduation*** were sent an email from the Los Angeles Community College District on Monday, May 11, 2020 with information on the Virtual Recognition Ceremony. How to Participate in the Virtual Recognition Ceremony 

STEP 1: Submit your RSVP

Let us know whether or not you would like to formally participating in LAVC's Virtual Recognition ceremony. If you do not RSVP, your name will not be called and you will not have a slide, but your name will still appear in a credit roll at the end.

The deadline to submit the RSVP form is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20.

NOTE: Uploading a video and picture are not required (optional). See Step 2 for how to upload a video with your RSVP, and Step 3 on how to upload your picture.

STEP 2: Upload your optional Video Recording

You have the option to upload (with your RSVP) a 10-second video that will be included during our LAVC Virtual Recognition Ceremony. Download the Virtual Recognition Video Recording Instructions for Graduates [PDF]. 

The deadline to RSVP and to submit your video is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20.

STEP 3: RSVP to submit your photo for the Grad Slide

Graduates have the option for a personalized grad slide (including an optional photo) to be shown during our Virtual Recognition Ceremony. Only students on the official list to graduates will receive an email from GradImages.

The grad slide, which can include your picture, your name, pertinent information (e.g., primary major), and a short quote, will be shown when you name is announced.

The RSVP deadline to submit your photo for the grad slide is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20

To RSVP, an email from Grad Images has been sent to you on how to submit the Grad Slide RSVP form. If you have not received an email from Grad Images, make sure to check your student email spam folder.

How to Purchase Your Cap and Gown

LAVC graduates traditionally wear black caps and gowns; nursing and RT graduates wear white caps and gowns.

Graduates are not required to purchase/wear a cap and gown for the Virtual Recognition Ceremony.

Black caps and gowns are now available for purchase from the LAVC Bookstore*. While you are not required to purchase a cap and gown to participate in the Virtual Recognition Ceremony, you can choose to purchase them at the LAVC Bookstore.

How to Order Your Cap & Gown from the LAVC Bookstore*:

  1. Go to the LAVC Bookstore website
  2. Click on GEN MERCH at the top
  3. Click on Graduation  accessories tab to the left
  4. Click on item they want to purchase and add it to their cart ,include their size in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS box and check out.

As an alternative, black caps and gowns can be purchased through the Pierce College Bookstore.

* If you decide to purchase a cap and gown, it might not be delivered on time for you to wear for the Virtual Recognition Ceremony.

You can even share the university you are transferring to this fall on LAVC's electronic marquees! Submit a request got LAVC to announce what school you are transferring to on the marquee, and your announcement will appear on the electronic marquees from June 1-12.

How to Announce Your Transfer School on the Marquee

Are you transferring to a college/university for Fall 2020? If you have accepted a transfer to a four-year college or university for Fall 2020, let LAVC share the good news on the college's electronic marquees. 

To submit your request, please email LAVC News with the following information by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2020:  

  • Your full name and student ID number
  • Screen shot of your university/college acceptance letter with your name (please block out your address and university student ID)

Stop by the LAVC marquee between June 1-12 to see your "name in lights". Take a photo with the tag #LAVCGrad2020 on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and we will share some of your photos with LAVC's social media followers.

Recieving Your Diploma

Fall 2019 graduates may have received their diplomas already; however, Spring 2020 candidates should receive their diploma by mail after the start of the Fall semester (approximately in October).

Make sure that your address is correct on the Student Information System. To change your address, you need to fill out a change-of-address form in the Admissions Office.

Please note that the Graduation Office will first certify your spring semester grades in order to issue a diploma. Your participation in the virtual recognition ceremony does not indicate you have completed all requirements for graduation.

In the meantime, if you need proof of graduation, you may request an official copy of your transcripts from the Admissions and Records Office, or you can print an unofficial transcript from the Student Information System.
