LAVC Helping Hands Food Pantry Open This Spring to Helps the Hungry on Campus

The LAVC Helping Hands Food Pantry is open during the Spring 2019 Semester every Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Campus Center's Monarch Patio. The campus food pantry is open to all students, faculty/staff and the community, and offers a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, dry and canned foods, milk and juice. It also has a representative on hand to assist students with applying to the CalFresh program. In addition, the campus community is still encouraged to make a "Plus One" donation of non-perishable foods (individuals who donate 20 times will get a prize), or they can donate online to Helping Hands Project through the LAVC Foundation.

LAVC Helping Hands Food Pantry Open This Spring to Helps the Hungry on Campus

The LAVC: Helping Hands Project operates the LAVC Helping Hands Food Pantry twice a week in the Campus Center's Patio during the Spring 2019 semester to help needy students, faculty and staff on campus.

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) released a 2016 study that found that one in five community college students in the LACCD experiences housing and food insecurity. To meet this need, LAVC is one of the college campuses participating in the Hunger-Free Campus Initiative, which has a goal to help support students on campus who are hungry and/or food insecure.

LAVC established its campus food pantry in the Fall of 2018. The campus food pantry offers free fresh produce including fruits and vegetables, non-perishable canned food, dry beans and rice, as well as milk and juice. In addition, the pantry has a representative on hand to help students with applying to the CalFresh program, a nutrition program that can help households buy healthy foods.

During the Spring 2019 semester, the LAVC Food Pantry is open in Campus Center's Monarch Patio on the following dates:

Since 2018, the LAVC Helping Hands Food Pantry has been working with the non-profit Food Forward to distribute fresh foods and vegetables from area farmers markets that are surplus produce to needy students, faculty and staff. In addition, Helping Hands collects donations of unused breakfast items from area LAUSD elementary schools and distributes it to the needy at the campus food pantry. Donations of non-perishable food from members of the campus community as well as the public are also distributed at the pantry.

The LAVC Helping Hands Project encourages faculty and staff to give in its "Plus One" donation drive. This donation drive encourages employees to buy a non-perishable food item while they are grocery shopping to donate to the pantry; faculty and staff who donate 20 times and get a prize! In addition, cash donations to the pantry can be made through the LAVC Foundation website; select the “Helping Hands Project” and in the special instructions option note “Pantry”.
