LAVC Student Union Receives an AISC National Award

The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) awarded the LAVC Student Union with a 2017 IDEAS² (Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel) National Award at the 2017 NASCC: The Steel Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

The LAVC Student Union (also known as, the Monarch Center construction project) received its IDEAS² National Award in the category of $15 million to $75 million dollars in total project costs. The building was commended for its innovative use of structural steel to create an "open air design" and for its "good use of geometry with long spans".

Sponsored by AISC, the IDEAS² Award Program recognized 11 outstanding steel structures in the nation in three categories plus two special awards. IDEAS² is the highest honor bestowed on building projects by the structural steel industry in the United States.

IDEAS² recognizes construction projects across the United States, where structural steel has been utilized in an innovative manner. The innovative use of structural steel may be in one of the following areas: the accomplishment of the structure's program, the expression of architectural intent, the application of innovative design approaches to the structural system, and/or the utilization of productivity enhancing construction methods. All the award winning IDEAS² projects are featured on the AISC's IDEAS² Awards Web page and will also be featured in an upcoming issue of Modern Steel Construction magazine.
