Carnegie Units

Carnegie units or Carnegie hours are the number of hours per unit in which a course is taught. They are always calculated on an 18-week semester format, regardless of the length of course term. Use the chart below to determine the lecture/laboratory break-down that you need. The hours are shown "per week" assuming the 18-week format (the numbers written on the Course Outline); to find the number of hours you would be teaching on a non-18-week format, divide the "Total Hours Per Semester" by the number of weeks you will teach (e.g., your 4-unit, 2 hour lecture, 6 hour lab course will be 144 hours. Divide this by 16 for a 16-week format, and you will have 9 hours per week. 6-week format? Divide by 6 and you get 24 hours a week.)

Basic formula: 1 unit equals 1 hour of lecture, or 2 hours lab with homework, or 3 hours lab without homework.

If your course has more than 5 units, simply find the rows that add up to the unit/lecture/lab combination that you want. For example, a 7 unit course with lecture and lab without homework could be:
