This VCAP certificate was designed in conjunction with the Child Development Chair. It consists of the same classes offered in the Child Development Department and are taught by the same qualified faculty.  The certificate meets the educational requirements for a Preschool Teacher as defined in TITLE 22. The certificate is designed to be completed in a year, and prepares the student to teach preschool in the private sector.

In the current economic climate, it is valuable to obtain skills that will allow you to start working in your chosen field as soon as possible. This certificate will allow you to do that. Deciding to work with children is one that will bring many rewards, and can be one of the most important jobs one can do.

Caring for children can be challenging and it is important to understand what one is going to be investing their time and energy toward. Also, one needs to consider if they the qualities and skills you need in order to provide high quality child care.

*A partial list of questions, provided by the LAVC Child Development Department are:  

  • Do I like to work around groups of children?
  • Am I a patient and tolerant person?
  • Am I able to set limits with children?
  • Do I have communication skills with Adults and Children?
  • Am I good team player?
  • Do I have a support system to assist  me if I accept a job paying a low wage with the possibility of little or no benefits?
  • Do I have the physical stamina and health to care for young children?

Scissors Courses in the Certificate

To earn this VCAP Child Development certificate the student must complete four classes which equal 12 units.  The four required classes are:

  • CD1 – Child Growth and Development
  • *CD 3 – Creative Experiences for Children
  • CD 11 – Home, School and Community Relations
  • **CD 42 – The Child in Diverse Society

*CD 4 may also be taken in its place through the Child Development Program.
**CD2, 10, 35 and 48 can be taken its place through the Child Development Program.

What more can I do with this certificate?

Students who complete the VCAP Child Care Center Associate Teacher Certificate can work in private, for-profit centers as defined in Title 22.

Additionally, students can work toward the following certificates:

About *The Child Development Skills Certificate - Consists
Child Development 1, 3, 11 and 42. These classes are offered
once a year.  Completion of 12 units meets the State Department
of Social Services minimum requirements for Child Care Center
Associate Teacher in private, for-profit centers as defined in Title 22 (all courses must be completed with a grade  of C or better).
