spring 2015

AWARDS/RECOGNITION BANQUET – 5.21.2015

TRiO’s award/recognition banquet was a super success.  There was delicious food, fun entertainment, motivational speakers and our award ceremony (including many scholarships given).  The wonderful entertainment was provided by 2 of our own TRiO students – Leslie Lopez on vocals and Jorge Vasquez on guitar.

 

 

 

 

 

 

FIELD TRIP TO CAL STATE LA – 4.17.2015

Trio students were given a rare opportunity to have an extended tour of the  Forensic Building at CAL STATE LA. They were given information about the related majors such as Administration of Justice.

 

 

 

 

Health Careers – 3.25.2015

This workshop was given by LAVC’s Health Department. A registered nurse, a public health educator and a physician assistant were in attendance to explain their roles in the health field.

 

 

 


FIELD TRIP UCI & CSUF – 3.20.2015

TRiO took a field trip with the Career/Transfer Center to UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton. Tours and Admission workshops were given so students could get an overall opinion of each school.  Lunch was provided.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MATH WORKSHOP BY PROFESSOR KAWAI – 3.9.2015

Students were informed about study strategies, test taking strategies and how to prepare for final exams. Professor Kawai made this workshop fun and informative for our TRiO students.

 

 

 

 

FIELD TRIP – BODIES & TITANIC – 3.6.2015

Students went to the Premier Exhibition Center in Buena Park to view the Bodies Exhibition and then went to see the Titanic exhibition.

 

 

 

 

 

 

STRESS MANAGEMENT   – 2.19.2015

This workshop was given by the Psychological Services department at Valley College.  TRiO students were informed about what stress is, its symptoms and causes and given valuable tips on life style changes and relaxation techniques.

 

 

Fall 2014

Welcome to Finals Week Brunch- 12.09.14

The TRiO staff provides the students with brunch in order, to encourage students to do well in finals and just give motivating remarks while students are there. Students are also given information regarding their finals dates and times and any other reminders from our program. 

 

 

 

Field Trip to CSUN performing art center to watch Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan- 12.04.14

Students were given the opportunity to go and watch Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan located in the CSUN performing arts center. Along with given the opportunity to tour the Visual Communications department and had the privilege of a short Q & A with the head of the graphic design department.  

 

 

Wellness Seminar led by Trina Lewis- 11.09.14

Students were able to learn different techniques when it came to implementing how to juice effectively in order to become more healthy. Along with being able to participate in exercise through both zumba and yoga. 

 

 

 

University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University- 11.03.14 

TRiO students, along with the Transfer Center, went on a field trip to visit University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University. Students were able to tour the campus at both schools and see how the student life is. Students enjoyed lunch at San Diego State in the student union with current SDSU students.

 

Field Trip To Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)- 10.24.14 

A tour led by a docent of the MOCA, enabled our students to gain the most knowledge about the exhibits at this museum. The exhibits were very diverse giving our students a wide expanse of information. Most of the participants expressed a desire to go back and visit the other MOCA's locations as well. 

 

 

 


Fall Welcome Back Seminar- 09.17.14

A welcome seminar was held to acquaint TRiO students with the resources available on campus. Speakers from TAP, Career/Transfer Center, Financial Aid, SSD, Health Center, Psychological Services, Service Learning, ASU and Co-Operative Education Presented information about their programs.

TRiO Drum Circle- 08.22.14

Roberto Gutierrez, LAVC Manufacturing Academy, conducted a creative and interactive teambuilding drum circle activity. This incorporated many personal development skills such as critical thinking, teambuilding, conflict resolution, effective communication and active listening techniques.

Students took a walking field trip around historical and diverse places surrounding L.A. from Union Station to Grand Central Market.

Motivational Seminar/Awards Banquet – 5.29.14

TRiO hosted 125 people at its' end of the year Motivational Banquet. Our motivational speakers were inspirational in the telling of their stories of success since leaving Los Angeles Valley College. We had 36 graduates/transfers this year and many were emotional in relating how they got to this point in their lives. Other awards given were for the Dean's/President's List, Academic Achievement and Scholarship winners. It was a very successful evening and students came away motivated to do their best.

Grammy Museum – 5.9.14

TRiO collaborated with EOPS in providing the opportunity for our students to go to the Grammy Museum in the LA Live area of Los Angeles. After viewing the exhibit about Jenny Rivera, they toured the rest of the museum showing artists such as Michael Jackson, The Carpenters, etc.

Pepperdine University: Midsummer Night's Dream – 4.3.14
TRiO hosted a trip to the theater at Pepperdine University. Their drama department put on the Shakespeare play "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The students enjoyed the experience.

Cal State Channel Islands – 3.14.14
TRiO took a bus of students to the Cal State Channel Islands campus which is in Camarillo.
After a tour of the campus, the admissions department held a workshop. Many of our students were so impressed with the campus that they decided to apply to that school.

Final Exam Kick-Off Holiday Party- 12.4.13

The staff of TRiO cooked lunch for our students to relax before the surge of finals.  Handouts and information was dispensed about stress and anxiety and how to alleviate it.

Getty Villa- 11.12.13

A fun time was held on our field trip to the Getty Villa in Malibu.  The Getty sponsored College Night for all college students in the area. Music, Art Tours and food made the evening a success.

TRiO  students took a bus trip to Cal State Long Beach.  Students toured the campus, had an admission workshop and free time to explore on their own.

 TRiO Bridge Workshop- 7.9.13

The Writing Center sponsored a workshop titled “How to be a Better Student”.  The objective was to teach students how to write and the topics included research, organization, essay writing, MLA format, grammar and other points of interest.

TRiO/PUENTE Annual Awards Banquet – Achieving Your Dreams – 5.16.2013

TRiO combined with PUENTE for the first time for its' annual awards banquet. Great food, entertainment and speakers contributed to a fun evening for all. Many students got awards for Academic Achievement, Dean's List, Graduation and Scholarship Grant Aid.

Field Trip to Cal Poly Pomona and Kellogg West – 5.03.2013

TRiO combined with the engineering students from EOPS to go to Cal Poly Pomona and Kellogg West. The students were given lunch at Kellogg West and a tour and information session at the college.

Trip to Northern California with PUENTE - 4.01.2013 – 4.03.2013

TRiO took 14 students to Northern California with PUENTE. They visited UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz. Informative sessions and tours were held on all campuses.

Spring Welcome Back Seminar – 2.13.2013

On February 13,Myron H. Dembo, Ph.D Emeritus Professor of Educational Psychology University of Southern California came back to our campus and spoke on "Improving your Skills on Reading Textbooks and Taking Notes". Our students really enjoyed the one he gave in September and thus this one also was very well attended. Students who used his techniques said their grades improved and they would like to have him again "

Final Exams Kick-Off Holiday Party – 12.7.2012

On Friday, December 7th, TRiO had a holiday party to relieve the stress of our students before final exams. Students brought a gift for children for the holidays and enjoyed a light lunch.

 

 

University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University – 11.16.2012

TRiO students, along with the Transfer Center, went on a field trip to visit University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University. Students were able to tour the campus at both schools and see how student life is. Students enjoyed lunch at San Diego State in the student union with current SDSU students.

 

 

Getty Villa – 11.13.2012

TRiO students attended College Night at the Getty Villa in Malibu to enjoy an evening of art, music, food, and fun. Students were able to view objects from ancient Greece and Rome as well as a caricature of themselves from an artist on-site. Students were encouraged to wear a toga and to see a fashion show of ancient Greek and Roman attire.

 

 

California Science Center – 10.19.2012

The students attended an IMAX presentation about the Mysteries of Egypt and explored the Cleopatra exhibit. The Cleopatra exhibit was interactive and students walked around with an audio remote that gave them insight as to what was happening in Cleopatra’s life at different stages. Students were able to tour the Science Center before lunch.

 

 

Welcome Back Seminar – 9.12.2012

On Wednesday, September 12, Myron H. Dembo, Ph.D, Emeritus Professor of Educational Psychology University of Southern California spoke on Improving Learning Skills Through Increased Motivation. It was very well attended and students received information on how to become a better student.

TRiO Awards Banquet – 6-1-2012
TRiO will be hosting the awards banquet on Friday, June 1st. A delicious dinner will be followed by a motivational speaker, entertainment, scholarships and other awards.

Cal State Los Angeles 
TRiO will be visiting Cal State Los Angeles in May.  In addition to a tour of the campus, students will have an opportunity to ask questions at the admissions workshop.

Financial Literacy Workshop – 3-28-2012
TRiO held a financial literacy workshop from 1:00-5:00 on Wednesday, March 28th.  We again had Professor Greg Bernhard teach this workshop which students found  very informative.

Cal State Northridge Media Arts Tour – 3-08-2012
TRiO and Upward Bound toured the Media Arts facility at Northridge and learned about the various types of programs offered through this department.  Students got firsthand knowledge about the film program from a film graduate. This student shared her final project, a short film that won recognition at the Latino Film Festival in Los Angeles. We are all looking forwardto the full length feature film.

After touring the Media Arts Department at CSUN, we were fortunate to experience Los Tigres del Norte, a popular corridos band, live in concert at the fabulous CSUN Performing Arts Center. What a great concert! We look forward to having more diverse events in the future!

Museum of Tolerance – 11.18.2011

A tour, led by a docent of the Museum of Tolerance, enabled our students to gain the most knowledge about the exhibits at this museum. The exhibits were very diverse giving our students a wide expanse of information. Most of the participants expressed a desire to go back with their families.

 

Cal State San Bernardino and UC Riverside – 11.04.2011

On Friday, November 4th, TRiO took our students to two campuses – one a Cal State and one UC to see the difference between the two schools. An admissions workshop was held on each campus so students could determine if they were eligible for these schools. A tour was then given which familiarized our students with each campus.

Recognition/Awards Banquet – 6.03.2011

On Friday, June 3rd from 5:00-7:00, TRiO’s end of the year banquet will be held. There will be motivational speakers, entertainment , awards and food. This culminates our events for the year.

 

Financial Literacy Workshop – 05.06.2011

As of 2010, all TRiO students must have financial literacy training. We had a workshop on Friday, May 6 from 8:30-12:30 run by Professor Greg Bernhard. Some of the topics he covered were Money Anxiety, Budgeting, Borrowing Basics, Credit Reports and Credit Cards. The students comments indicated that they left feeling informed and that the speaker was outstanding.

 

Cal State Channel Islands – 04.29.2011

On Friday, April 29, 2011, TRiO visited the campus of Cal State Channel Islands which is in Camarillo. After an admissions workshop, students were given a tour of the campus. Many expressed interest in attending this university because of its size. There are 3800 students attending this campus.

 

Ronald Reagan Library and Museum – 03.18.2011

Our trip to the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum was informative and interesting. Besides learning about President Reagan and his Presidency, students were able to board Air Force One, see the inside of the Oval Office and a piece of the Berlin Wall among other points of interest.

UC Santa Barbara –10.22.2010

TRiO students interested in visiting the University of California, Santa Barbara campus attended

a field trip to the school. We had an informative admissions workshop and a tour of the cam pus.

There was then an opportunity for the students to go to other departments and buildings on their

own

 

The Getty Villa – 10.01.2010

TRiO students were very excited to visit the Getty Villa in Malibu. This museum features

cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean World. Audio tours were purchased for the students and

they were able to go through the exhibits at their own pace.

We also had a docent led Architecture and Gardens tour.

Nursing Workshop – 07.30.2010

This well-attended workshop dealt with information on how to be successful in entering the nursing program at the college/university of your choice. It included information on nursing prerequisites, the TEAS test and volunteer/internship opportunities in hospitals.

 

Award/Recognition Night – 05.21.2010

This year our banquet was held on May 21, 2010. Alumni spoke about their experiences

and awards were given to students for graduation and academic achievement. Grant Aid

scholarships were also given to select students.

 

Cal State Long Beach – 04.16.2010

TRiO students were given a comprehensive admissions workshop and tour of the campus of Cal

State Long Beach. Many students expressed interest in attending this campus and the admissions

workshop was very informative as to the majors available
