Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD)

The SSD program provides support services, specialized instruction, and educational accommodations to students with disabilities so that they can participate as fully and benefit as equitably from the college experience as their non-disabled peers. A Student Educational Contract (SEC) is developed for each student which links that student’s goals, curriculum program, and academic accommodations to his/her specific disability-related educational limitation.

WHAT IS SSD?

SSD supports the participation of students with disabilities in educational activities consistent with the mission of the California Community Colleges, federal and state law, and LACCD policy (Administrative Regulation E-100 http://www.laccd.edu/admin_regs/ ). SSD services, special instruction, and accommodations function to provide students with disabilities equal opportunities to successfully complete their educational goals. It is the mission of SSD to promote the maximum independence and integration of students with disabilities.

 

The Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Office is located in Student Services Annex, Room 175.

SSD Office hours are MWThF 8:00am-4:00pm; and on Tuesdays from 8:00am-7:00 pm or by appointment.

HOW DO I BECOME ELIGIBLE FOR SERVICES FROM SSD?

Eligibility Criteria: The specific disability must be verified, and there must be an educational limitation that precludes the student from fully participating in general education without additional specialized services.

To be eligible for services from SSD, a student with a verified physical, learning, medical, or psychological disability, otherwise eligible for entrance into the college, must first meet with a SSD counselor and provide documentation of disability. The SSD counselor works closely with the student to identify the educational limitation(s) of the student so effective support services and accommodations can be recommended. ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students who can benefit from progressive physical conditioning exercise can enroll in adapted physical education classes to improve their fitness levels. Under the supervision of an adapted physical education instructor, the individual is encouraged to maximize his/her physical potential within the limitations of his/her disability. An individualized physical education plan is developed through an interactive process that includes the student, instructor, and medical recommendations supplied by the student’s physician. Students are responsible for securing attendant services appropriate to their personal needs. Call (818) 778-5638.

LAVC is adjacent to major public transportation routes including bus lines 154, 158, 420 and the Orange Line. DASH stops at the front of campus on Fulton Avenue.
