The B.U.I.L.D. Series

LAVC Professional Development Presents the BUILD Series

What is the BUILD series?

The BUILD series consists of campus events centered around a specific book and the ideas it presents. Participants  will read the featured book, watch related videos, or attend guest lectures. We will meet in groups to discuss how the ideas can inform what we do as a college and in our own lives. These gatherings will build our skills relating to Guided Pathways, equity, diversity, academic excellence, and the changing  demands of the college environment. Everyone on campus is invited to participate in any of the events. B.U.I.L.D. Flyer

Come, join us, for one or all of the events in a series!

When is the next BUILD event?

Our first book is Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein. Nudge examines how we think in order to make choices, and how we can learn to make better ones. This book selection ties directly to our move into Guided Pathways.

The Nudge Edition kick-off event is February 14, 2019, 1:30-2:30 PM in the Fireside Room. Tyler Prante will present on Understanding Choice Architexture: Lessons from Behavioral Economics for LAVC. Check out the details.

What books will be featured?

At this time, there are several books in consideration for future BUILD series which include Blind Spot: Hidden Biases of Good People by Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald,  and Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead by Brene Brown. Let us know if you have a suggestion!

“As you discover what strength  you can draw from your community in this world  from which it stands apart, look outward as well as inward.  Build bridges instead of walls.”
