LAVC and Achieving the Dream
Achieving the Dream (ATD) is a national nonprofit that is helping more community college students succeed (complete courses, earn certificates and earn degrees). It is particularly concerned about low-income students and students of color. The organization is serving 160 institutions in 30 states and the District of Columbia, and all these institutions want to see the same change on their campus. In March 2011, the entire Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) joined ATD to help each campus improve student success. As part of this four-year project, LAVC is one of 30-college participating in the 2011 cohort which will begin to work immediately to identify strategies for improving student success, closing achievement gaps, and increasing retention, persistence, and completion rates. LAVC will be working with ATD to establish a toolbox of strategies and resources to help the college achieve our plans to help close achievement gaps and improve student outcomes. In this new initiative called PASS (Preparing All Students for Success), LAVC will work with ATD to track the progress of its students as they move through classes—to see where they are successful, and where they are not. This will mean that LAVC will have to use data intentionally and, in some cases, may need to gather new data to help the college understand what keeps students in college, and what causes them to leave.
As a member of the ATD cohort, LAVC will develop and implement research-based policies and practices based on quantitative and qualitative analyses of its institutional strengths, problem areas, and achievement gaps. Throughout the Achieving the Dream process, LAVC will have the opportunity to learn from other Achieving the Dream institutions, and it will receive assistance from experienced practitioners in building a culture of evidence campus-wide, using data to identify problems, setting priorities, and measuring progress toward increasing student success.
