CAMP PHILOSOPHY

Monarch Summer Camps recognize that growth is an essential part of every camper's summer. We nurture this process through a wide variety of programs for all ages. The sports instruction and creative activities we offer facilitate the development of cooperation, creativity, motor skills and sportsmanship among our campers. Socialization skills and friendships are a natural result of the Monarch Camp experience. A special effort is made to make each camper feel special and a part of the group. Each camper is a unique individual. By providing opportunities that nurture growth, our staff strives to assist each camper achieve their personal potential. The staff is dedicated to the principle of "growth through participation". Besides being specially trained for Monarch Summer Camp activities, the staff works all year teaching, coaching, and interacting with children and adolescents. We look forward to meeting your family's summer camp needs.

CAMP CHOICES

Monarch Day Camp is our classic day camp program for ages 5-14. Sports, arts & crafts, field trips and swimming lessons fill our day. We also offer many special interest camps that specialize in basketball, baseball, theater arts, soccer, tennis, fishing, aquatics, cheerleading, water polo, skin diving, dance, volleyball, judo, gymnastics and springboard diving. Our Adventure Camp features overnight trips to off campus locations like Whitney Portal, Big Pine Canyon & the Kern River. Our skin diving camp includes an overnight trip to Catalina Island. We also offer weekend family camping trips to locations like the Beach and Sequoia National Forest. Check out camp activities like Overnight Camping on campus, our parent picnic, trips to amusement parks, Zuma Beach trips, Cookouts, Field Trips, theme days and numerous special activities.

CAMP HOURS

Monarch Day Camp begins at 8:30AM each morning and ends at 4:30PM each afternoon. All sports camps begin at 9:00AM and end at 4:00PM. You may sign up by the week and take advantage of our discount programs or choose a combination of days at Camp. (Example: sign up for Tues., Wed., & Thurs., or Mon., Wed. & Fri.). Three days per week minimum. Campers must bring their own lunch, snack, swimsuit and towel each day. We do not accept responsibility for any valuables brought to camp. A beverage is supplied each day at lunch. Closed toe footwear and athletic socks are mandatory for safe participation in camp activities. Extended Care is offered free of charge beginning at 7:15AM each morning and until 5:45PM each afternoon at the Archery Field.

CAMP FACILITY

Monarch Summer Camps are conducted on the 105 acres of Los Angeles Valley College. Our facilities include an Olympic size swimming pool, several gymnasiums, multiple athletic fields, a stadium, tennis courts, archery range, arts and crafts facilities, recreation rooms, theatre arts facilities, etc. The LAVC campus also has a cafeteria, library, media center, planetarium, student store, etc. We also have a 24-hour on campus, LA County Sheriffs Department Substation that maintains the safe environment of our campus. No camps have a safer, more complete physical facility than Monarch Summer Camps. All of our regular activities are held on our campus. No time is lost transporting campers from facility to facility.

CAMP STAFF

Our camps are staffed by an experienced group of counselors and coaches selected for their skills, enthusiasm, common sense, and especially their ability to relate to children and adolescents. In addition to our counseling staff we employ aquatic specialists, arts & craft specialists, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) and sport coaches. An Adult Counselor (18+) plus a Junior Counselor (14-17), supervise each camper group. Our camper-to-adult staff ratio averages eight to one. Group sizes will vary depending upon campers' age and day of camp. The majority of our veteran staff returns each year, insuring an experienced camp staff. There are no Camps that employ a more qualified staff. (See staff link for staff biographies.)

MONARCH DAY CAMP (AGES 5 & UP)

Our sports-oriented day camp offers Red Cross-certified swimming lessons, tennis, soccer, softball, golf, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball and other sports. Arts and Crafts, movies, cookouts, educational field trips, skits, games and activities are featured. (Actual activities will vary by day.)

You may enroll for any combination of three days. (Example: sign up for Tuesdays-Thursdays-Fridays or Mondays-Wednesdays-Fridays, whichever best fits your schedule!) "Three days per week minimum." No discounts apply to this program.

MONARCH SPORT-SPECIALTY CAMPS (AGES 9 & UP)


Monarch Sport-Specialty Camps are designed to meet the needs of developing adolescents. The program is tailored to those individuals who desire instruction in the current technique and application of sport skill fundamentals. Each session offers a balance of instruction and recreational activities. Where appropriate, participants are video taped for kinesthetic analysis. Instructors include College and High School Coaches, Physical Education Majors, and former collegiate competitors.
Stipulation: Enrollment in Monarch Sport-Specialty Camps is conditional. Campers are accepted with the stipulation that they may be transferred to Monarch Day Camp if they are unable to manage the requirements of any sports camp to the satisfaction of the coach. (Attention span, motor development, skill level, strength, endurance, maturity & mental attitude are all taken into consideration).

ADVENTURE CAMP

Adventure camp offers activities like rock climbing, rope work, wind surfing, hiking, fishing, camping, river tubing, beach activities, bicycling, Orienteering, horseback riding, snorkeling, kayaking, river tubing, etc. A tentative calendar of activities is being planned for each day (Actual activities may vary by day). Many of these activities involve overnight field trips to off campus locations. A two to four night camping excursion is included during each week of Adventure Camp. An additional material fee of is included in the Prepaid fee to cover the cost of daily field trip activities.
Some of the overnight camping locations we have visited in the past include the Whitney Portal Campground (Lone Pine, CA), the Kern River (Sequoia National Park), El Capitan Beach Park (Santa Barbara Area), Big Pine Canyon (Big Pine, CA - Inyo National Forest), Tillie Creek Group Campground (Lake Isabella), etc. Look for our one week "Tour of the Sierra's", which features overnight stops in or near Sequoia National Park, Yosemite National Park, Mammoth Lakes and the Kern River. This Adventure will feature side trips to famous underground caverns, Giant Sequoia's, Sierra Rivers, Scenic Lakes, swimming hot springs, and fabulous water falls.

ALL-SPORTS CAMP

All-sports is a sport camp that offers soccer, gymnastics, tennis, golf, softball, basketball, volleyball, team games, swim lessons, etc. Also included are cookouts, trips, and recreational activities. No arts & crafts program, that time is used for participation in team and individual sport activities. (Actual activities will vary by day)

AQUATICS CAMP

Instruction will cover a number of aquatic areas including competitive swimming techniques, skin diving, springboard diving, lifesaving techniques, water polo, and water safety, etc.

BASEBALL CAMP

The Baseball Camp will be conducted by Dan Schumacher (LAVC Asst. Baseball Coach) and staff. The fundamentals and finer points of hitting, fielding, pitching, strategy, etc. will be covered. Camp includes extensive time in the batting cage. (No camp 7/4)

BASKETBALL CAMP

Come and fastbreak your way to the game of basketball in the LAVC South Gym . Learn the fundamentals of offense and defense in any of the weekly sessions. Participants may attend all sessions, as players will be evaluated and will play at their own level during each week. Boys and girls are welcome to join the fun, team work and sportsmanship in our daily games.
Basketball Camp will be conducted by Jason Inglis and staff.

CHEERLEADING CAMP

Instruction in a variety of skills will be covered including cheers, routines, yells, and building sets. Boys and girls will receive coaching for individual performances and group formations.

DANCE CAMP

Instruction in a variety of skills may be covered including Ballroom, Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Funk, Disco, Folk, Aerobic, and Social Dancing.

FISHING CAMP

Christian Guzman will be directing our fishing camp for the third year. Instruction in basic salt & fresh water fishing techniques. Tackle, baits, lures, presentation, feeding patterns, etc., will be covered. Daily field trips to local freshwater and saltwater fishing sites. Campers need to supply their own fresh water fishing tackle (Fresh Water Pole with Spinning Reel & 150 yards of 8 - 10 lb test monofilament fishing line). Fees include four field trips (one each day) such as, a trout fishing trip (Troutdale), a harbor skiff fishing trip (Redondo Beach Harbor - Rocky Point Fishing Skiffs) and an ocean 1/2 day boat trip (Marina Del Rey - Half Day Boat). Our schedule is tentative and subject to change. An additional material fee is included in the Prepaid fee to cover the cost of the trips.

GYMNASTICS CAMP

Instruction will cover the Olympic events. Emphasis will be on technique, skill development and practice. Short routines will be learned and demonstrated. Camp will be conducted by Bambi Olesiuk & members of the L.A.V.C. Gymnastics Staff. Campers attending Monarch Summer Camp that enroll in the Gymnastics Clinic may join the GYMNASTICS CLINIC immediately following their Camp Day at 3:30PM or 5:00PM. These campers will be delivered to their Gymnastics Class & may be picked up immediately after their Gymnastics Clinic Class, in the Gymnastics Center.

SKIN DIVING CAMP/CATALINA ISLAND TRIP


Instruction will cover the basics of underwater technique and safety. Students will learn the proper use of mask, fins, snorkel, and accessory equipment. Marine animals and terrain will also be covered, along with tides, currents, and local diving locations. Camp will include an overnight trip to the Isthmus of Catalina Island for practical application of skills. Campers need to supply their own mask, fins & snorkel. Additional camping supplies will be required for the three day overnight trip to Catalina Island (ie., sleeping bag, extra warm clothes, and eating utensils) Our Camp is run by certified Lifeguards & SCUBA Certified members of the camp staff. An information packet will be provided upon registration. An additional material fee is included in the Prepaid fee to cover the cost of the Catalina trip.

THEATER ARTS CAMP

Instruction will cover basic acting skills and small group interaction. Campers have use of some college theater arts facilities. Camp is run by college theater arts majors.

SOCCER CAMP

Instruction will cover the basic fundamentals for individuals, maneuvers for teams and strategies of soccer. A balance of skill development, general rules, and games will take place.

SOFTBALL CAMP

Instruction will cover the basic fundamentals and finer points of hitting, fielding, pitching, strategy, etc.. A balance of teaching skill development, learning general rules and playing team games will be given.

SPRINGBOARD DIVING CAMP

Instruction will cover the five required dives of Front, Back, Reverse, Inward, and Half-Twist. Optional dives will be covered based upon the student's progress and ability.

TENNIS CAMP

The Tennis Camp will be conducted by Ray Finks (Tennis Pro) and staff.Instruction will cover basic skills and drills required for proficiency. Strategy and gamesmanship will be taught. Skill development and playing time will be emphasized. Campers need to supply own racket.

VOLLEYBALL CAMP

Instruction will cover volleyball fundamentals, strategy, drills and games. A balanced program of skill development drills and games will be emphasized. Serves, rotations, and set-ups will be practiced.

WATER POLO CAMP

Instruction will cover basic skills and drills required for proficiency. Strategy and gamesmanship will be taught. Skill development and playing time will be emphasized.

OVERNIGHT CAMPS (On Campus)

Our Campus Overnight Camps are conducted on the grassy area of our Archery Field or Football Stadium and offers our campers a night to sleep outdoors. Children enjoy traditional camp activities in a familiar, controlled environment. Sample activities may include night swimming, campfire songs, dancing, tug of war, sack races, cage ball, s'mores, roasting marshmallows, video movies, card games by camp light, etc. Each camper is assigned to an appropriate age group for the evening's activities. For an added measure of safety, the LA County Sheriff's department maintains a substation at LA Valley College and patrols our campus. In the morning, our staff prepares a balanced breakfast for our overnight campers. Overnights have proven to be one of our most popular and best-enjoyed activities. Overnight Camp is held on Friday evening, for the convenience of our campers' parents. (Parental Discretion advised for 5 & 6 year olds.)

MONARCH TRAVEL CAMP (Tuesdays, Ages 9 & Up)

Monarch Travel Camp will be offered this summer for our older campers who are at least nine years of age. On set Tuesdays, the Travel Camp will go to a major amusement attraction. This year, Travel Campers will go to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Disney California Adventure, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, Universal Studios and Raging Waters. Save yourself the expense, time, guilt and aggravation of taking your family during your vacation and send your children with Monarch Camp to all the Amusement Parks.

These camps will be limited to approximately 45 campers. The cost to campers will include all entry fees, transportation fees, camp fees, etc. Campers must bring their own sack lunch. Some venues do not permit campers to bring in any food. If a site does not permit food to be brought in, campers must bring money to purchase their own lunch and snack. Monarch Camp will purchase a dinner meal on each trip. (Disneyland & California Adventure - Rain Forrest Cafe, Universal - Mel's Dinner, Hurricane Harbor & Magic Mountain - In-And- Out, The Knott's Berry Farm - Knott's Chicken Dinner, & Raging Waters - In-And- Out). Monarch is not responsible for any valuables brought by campers or staff on trips. The fees listed are in addition to regular camp fees and Campers must be enrolled in Monarch Camp the minimum 3 days per week during the week of Travel Camp requested.

FAMILY CAMP - PARENT/CAMPER ACTIVITY

Family Camp is an opportunity for Parents, to join their children and our counselors for some fun in the sun. Family Camp activities have included fishing in clear Sierra streams, skin diving at Lover's Cove (Catalina Island), hiking to the Needles Fire Lookout Tower (Sequoia National Forest), River Tubing the Kern River, hiking to the Giant Sequoia's (Trail of 100 Giants), sliding down a granite water slide (Adler Creek Slabs), roasting marshmallows over a campfire, singing songs around the campfire, barbequing a steak dinner over fresh coals, eating our freshly caught fish, A visit to the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, A hike down the lower Mt. Whitney Trail (Mt. Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48 states),and boogie boarding a few pristine waves, etc.

Previous Family Camp adventures have included overnight camping trips to the Sequoia National Forest (Quaking Aspen Group Camp), Kern River (Tillie Creek Group Camp), Carpinteria State Beach (Group Camp), Whitney Portal Group Camp (Inyo National Forest - Lone Pine), Yosemite National Park (Yosemite Valley Group Camp), and Mammoth Lakes - Reds Meadow (Pumice Flat Group Camp). We have also enjoyed day trips to Catalina Island (Avalon) by boat, at train trip (Amtrak) to Santa Barbara from Van Nuys, a beach barbeque at Leo Cabrillo Beach, a half-day fishing boat trip (Marina Del Rey) and an overnight fishing boat trip to Catalina Island.
