PROJECT VALLEY WORKS Los Angeles Valley College’s Job Training Program, which has provided customized training and job placement for hundreds of low to moderate income workers in the San Fernando Valley, will leverage the support of our experienced and caring community partners to sponsor a living wage job hiring program which addresses the poverty and lack of decent paying jobs in the Valley region, especially for those who have experienced the greatest barriers to access. Training will be delivered to two groups of individuals. The first group will be incumbent workers who are in need of upgrading their skills for career advancement. LAVC Job Training will work closely with employers in the Northeast San Fernando Valley to upgrade skills of employees, which will, in turn, provide a more skilled employee pool and increase the economic base of the region. The second group will be new employees, who will work in new businesses associated with the North Hollywood Redevelopment Project. Funded by the HUD Office of University Partnerships, Project Valley Works Partnership will prepare individuals for jobs at the 22-acre North Hollywood Redevelopment Mixed-Use Project (NoHo Project) located in the disadvantaged area of North Hollywood in the City of Los Angeles. This is a workforce and economic development program. Ultimately, the goals of the Project Valley Works Partnership are to create an effective strategy of targeted outreach to candidates; screening, customized recruitment, focused training (e.g. customer service; computer literacy, etc.); and English/Communication skills. Our goals match HSIAC’s goals of helping Hispanic-serving colleges expand their role and effectiveness in addressing community development and economic development needs, as well as implementing projects designed primarily to benefit low and moderate income residents. In particular, the project will focus on those individuals who have been locked out of traditional avenues of employment and quality jobs. While waiting for construction on this project to be completed, LAVC will focus energies on businesses in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, as described above. The long term goal of all of our efforts is to boost the local economy. Our local partners include:
