Simple Rules to Follow about Online Netiquette

  • Do not type in all caps.
  • When composing an e-mail, do not leave the Subject: field blank.
  • Refrain from formatting your e-mail with colored text and background colors or images in your day to day communications.
  • On those rare occasions where it is necessary to send a group of people the very same e-mail, as a courtesy to those you are sending to, please list all of the recipients e-mail addresses in the BCC field. Never expose your contact's addresses to strangers!
  • Never give out phone numbers or personal information
  • Make a reasonable effort to search a Web site for the information you are looking for - "FAQs" or "About Us" sections may give you the answers you seek before you waste the site owner's time by e-mailing for information that is readily available on their site.
  • Do not use Return Receipt Request (RR) for each and every e-mail you send because you like "knowing" when someone opens your e-mail.
  • Understand that you will be on a continual learning curve.
  • Keep in mind that all private e-mail is considered to be copyrighted by the original author.
  • Do not forward virus warnings!
  • Always start your e-mail with "Hello", "Hi", "Dear"
  • Respect other people's time and bandwidth
  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life, follow the GOLDEN RULE.
  • Share expert knowledge
  • Respect other people's privacy
  • Be forgiving of other people's mistakes
