We are offering three consecutive series of three weekends of workshops, including our Computer Cornerstones series. Each workshop is 12 hours total instruction. Also notes a few “One-day-wonders” listed.

Cost: $60.00 for all workshops, except for the One Day Wonders, which are $100. All workshops are half-price with valid student registration/ID. To register, contact Casey at ideasreg@lavc.edu.

Workshop Overview

Here’s a quick glance of our workshop. For a more detail, see descriptions in the schedule below.

§       The Grand Tour workshops provide an extensive tour of the program’s interface, which explores in depth, the myriad of the program’s features, and introduces students to controls, tools, features, nomenclature and processes.

§       The Hands-on 1 workshop covers the basic skills of a program, and the Hands-on 2 are the continuation and refinement of the basic skills.

§       Computer Cornerstones 1-4

1)    The computer as a tool

2)    Fundamentals of file management

3)    An overview of computer graphics

4)    Information and images over e-mail and the web.

§                Microsoft Office offers an overview of the basics of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

§       We are featuring the One Day Wonders, which are a concentrated 6-8 hour workshop offered for one day (lunch included).

Photoshop Grand Tour CS5 - with Scott Greene 

Saturdays – August 14, 21, and 28 (10 AM to 2 PM)

InDesign Grand Tour with Scott Greene

One Day Wonder TBA – Killer I-Phone Apps – with Frank Moss

Saturday – August 14 (10 AM to 7 PM) – lunch included

 §       How to Build and Sell Your Killer App - learn in a nutshell, how to unleash your killer app on Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Take a tour of the iOS 4 Software Development Kit, including Cocoa Touch, XCode, Interface Builder, Instruments, Shark, and the iPhone Simulator. Learn Object Oriented Programming principles and the basics of Objective-C, Apple's language of choice for developing iOS 4 apps. See how you can create a functioning app with Interface Builder and two lines of code. Learn how to get your app on the Apple iTunes App Store and how to manage your relationship with Apple. Warning: Not for the faint of heart!

One Day Wonder SketchUp – with Mike Tadros

Saturday – August 21 (10 AM to 7 PM) – lunch included

§       Learn the basic skills specifically designed to deliver a well rounded conceptual framework for working in 3D modeling. Essential modeling techniques are covered. The workshop will also demonstrate modeling techniques that will expand your ability to model more complex projects while increasing speed, accuracy, and efficiency. Included is also the difference between groups and components and the use of organizational methods that utilize the component browser, outliner, and layer control functions of SketchUp.

One Day Wonder T-Splines – with Frank Moss

Saturday – August 28 - (10 AM to 7 PM) – lunch included

§       Learn how to model in 3D with the T-Splines plug-in for Rhino.

Advanced Illustrating with Photoshop – with Eric Tolladay 

Sundays – August 15, 22, and 29 (10 AM to 2 PM)

§       Learn how to think like a Photoshop expert. Special emphasis on advanced masking, color correction, beauty retouching, and photo compositing. Bring in your own work and questions. Workshop is custom tailored to meet the student’s individual needs. Prerequisite: Advanced users only.

After Effects Grand Tour – with Ray Hofstedt

Photoshop Hands-on 1 - with Scott Greene 

Saturdays – September 25, October 2, and 9 (10 AM to 2 PM)

§       Learn the basic skills including the tools palette, selection techniques, the concept of layers, and image manipulation. This workshop is hands-on project based learning. Prerequisite: Photoshop Grand Tour or familiarity with the Photoshop interface.

Introduction to MS Office 2004 – Word, Excel, PowerPoint - with Eva Bitar 

Saturdays – September 25, October 2, and 9 (10 AM to 2 PM)

InDesign Hands-on 1 – with Scott Greene

Saturdays – September 25, October 2, and 9 (3 PM to 7 PM)

§       Learn the basic skills including the tools palette, layout, and inserting graphics and text. It is hands-on project based learning. Prerequisite: InDesign Grand Tour or familiarity with the InDesign interface.

Computer Cornerstones I – The Computer as a Tool - with IDEAS Staff

Saturdays – September 25, October 2, and 9 (3 PM to 7 PM)

§       Learn the difference between MAC formats and PC formats. File management, launching software, memory management, email and web research techniques.

Sunday Workshops

Maya 3D Animation Hands-on 1 – with Ray Hofstedt

Sundays – September 26, October 3, and 10 (10 AM to 2 PM)

§       This 3D workshop introduces concepts in modeling, textures, lighting, animation, and rendering and integration with other production software. It is hands-on project based learning. Prerequisite: Maya Grand Tour or familiarity with the Maya interface.

After Effects Hands-on 1 – with Ray Hofstedt

Sundays – September 26, October 3, and 10 (10 AM to 2 PM)

§       Learn the basic skills with this amazing motion graphics and compositing software. Organizing and assembling digital assets, plan production workflows, learn green-screen and tracking techniques. It is hands-on project based learning. Prerequisite: After Effects Grand Tour or familiarity with the After Effects interface.

Photoshop Hands-on 2 - with Scott Greene

Saturdays – November 6, 13, and 20 (10 AM to 2 PM)

§       This is a continuation and refinement of basic skills including image adjustment options, filters and effects. It is hands-on project based learning. Prerequisite: Some knowledge of Photoshop.

Introduction to MS Office 2004 – Word, Excel, PowerPoint - with Eva Bitar

Saturdays – November 6, 13, and 20 (10 AM to 2 PM)

Illustrator Grand Tour – with Scott Greene

Saturdays – November 6, 13, and 20 (3 PM to 7 PM)

Computer Cornerstone II – Fundamentals of File Management – with IDEAS Staff

Saturdays – November 6, 13, and 20 (3 PM to 7 PM)

§       Learn the fundamentals of file management, record keeping, inventory tracking, and budget management using Microsoft Office applications

Sunday Workshops

Maya 3D Animation Hands-on 2 – with Ray Hofstedt

Sundays – November 7, 14, and 21 (10 AM to 2 PM)

§       This workshop continues the expertise on 3D Modeling, including applying surface effects and lighting. It is hands-on project based learning. Prerequisite: Some knowledge of Maya.

After Effects Hands-on 2 – with Ray Hofstedt

Sundays – November 7, 14, and 21 (3 PM to 7 PM)

§       This workshop continues the basics skills including tools for motion graphic, organizing and assembling digital assets, and output/rendering specs. It is hands-on project based learning. Prerequisite: Some knowledge of After Effects.
