After graduating from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art, Lauren Okayama began working as a teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District Early Childhood Education Division. A position that began as a job out of college evolved into a career path. Following several years in the classroom (working with both preschool and school-aged children), she moved into administrative positions. While working full-time, she returned to school and completed a Master of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education at California State University, Dominquez Hills. During her career with the Early Education Division, she worked as a center director at four different sites. After 20 years with the District, she left and worked as a consultant in the field of early childhood education.

In 1995, Lauren began teaching as an adjunct instructor in Child Development at several different community colleges. Three years later she was hired as a professor for the Child Development Department at Los Angeles Valley College. Since 1999, she has been serving as the department's Chair. At LAVC, her teaching focuses on field work and practicum, literacy, children’s literature and curriculum.
