CalWORKs Office Accepting GED Test Registrations Starting February 1

The LAVC CalWORKs Office will offer the next General Education Development (GED) Test on February 10 and 11; registrations will be accepted starting Wednesday, February 1 in the CalWORKs Office in Bungalow 14. The GED Test is offered once a month to adults who do not have a high school diploma. The LAVC Job Club will hold its next meeting for individuals who are seeking employment on Friday, January 27 from 9 a.m.-12 noon in Behavioral Science 101. This popular program has been highly successful in returning people to the workforce. LAVC to Offer a GED Practice Test on January 27

The LAVC CalWORKs Office will offer a practice test for the General Education Development (GED) test on Friday, January 27 at 9 a.m.; all interested individuals needs to sign up at 8:50 a.m. in Bungalow 14. In addition, the LAVC CalWORKs Office also offers the GED test once a month to adults who do not have a high school diploma and would like to earn a California High School Equivalency Certificate. Construction Notification—Tree Harvesting/Removal for the Performing & Media Arts Center

Selected areas around Lot B, Lot C, Music Building, Art Building, Campus Drive and College Road North will be subject to closure between November 29, 2011-January 20, 2012 for the tree harvesting and removal project for the new Performing and Media Arts Center. Trees in the north end of the mall will be removed to make way for the future construction site of the college's upcoming Performing and Media Arts Center. In addition, several of the trees will be harvested and the wood from those trees will be integrated into and prominently featured in the new building. Winter Session

 LAVC to Offer Winter Session 2012

LAVC announced that it will offer courses for Winter Session 2012 starting on January 3, 2012. A complete schedule of winter course offerings is now available on the schedules page. LAVC will offer a limited number of course in the high demand subjects of Biology, Child Development, English, Spanish, Political Science, Math, Health, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, Statistics, Sociology, Speech, Geography and more. Current LAVC students will be able to register for classes for Winter classes during their Spring 2012 online registration appointment. New and returning students will need to apply online.  LAVC to Host a Reception in Remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

The LAVC Diversity Committee will be holding an "I Have a Dream" reception to reflect on the life and dream of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Tuesday, January 17 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the President's Large Conference Room in the Administration Building. Guests will be invited to write their thoughts about Dr. King's dream and their personal dream for our state and our nation. Those thoughts will be included on a special display in Campus Center.  Attention Students—Don't Miss Out on an Opportunity to Study in Paris This Summer!

The LAVC Study Away Program will offer a study abroad program to Paris, France in July 2012. It will hold an information session for its 2012 Summer in Paris Program on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 12 noon-2 p.m. in the Foreign Language 102.The program is a month-long study program with ESA (European Studies Association), which will take place from July 1-31, 2012. The Winter Session 2012 will begin on Tuesday, January 3; classes will not meet on Monday, January 2. This winter, LAVC is offering more than 75 classes in several high demand subjects. Attention Campus Community—Construction Notification: Trees in Parking Lot G Along Burbank Boulevard to be Removed due to Public Safety Concerns

In the interest of public safety, the row of trees located along Burbank Avenue next to Parking Lot G and the new tennis courts will be removed starting mid-to-late November. The trees pose a significant public safety issue, so they will be removed to prevent potential injury to the campus community and the public. Those trees were also identified by an independent arborist for removal in the recently published LAVC Urban Forest Master Plan, which can be found at http://www.lavc.edu/revitalizingvalley/urbanforest.html.  LAVC Community Services to Hold Monarch Winter Camp from December 19-23

The LAVC Community Services Department will be offering its Monarch Camp this winter for boys and girls ages 5-12 years old from December 19-23 and 26-30, 2011. This winter, it will offer a regular day camp (ages 5-12) and the following specialty camps: Gymnastics (ages 5 and up) and Theater Arts (ages 8 and up). The regular camps will have games, sports, arts and crafts, a snow day on campus, bowling, ice skating, pizza party, cookout, special events, homework assistance and more!  LAVC Will be Closed for the Winter Break on Selected Dates

LAVC will be closed on December 18, 23-26, 29-31, 2011, and January 1-2, 2012 for the Winter Break. There will be some offices that may be open and/or offer limited services on December 19-22 and 27-28, so visitors should first contact the office directly to check its hours of operation during the Winter Break.The campus community should be aware that access to most buildings and/or rooms on campus will only be given by making prior arrangements with the Sheriff's Office. The campus will reopen for normal operating hours on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

Final Week for the "Dane Picard, Selected Works" Exhibition at the LAVC Art Gallery

The LAVC Art Gallery exhibition entitled "Dane Picard, Selected Works" will be closing on Thursday, December 15. This exhibition, which is running from November 9-December 15, is comprised of 37 selected works by Dane Picard focuses on the last ten years of the artist's unique process in digital media. Picard has been working with digital media since the 1980s, experimenting with early computer and animation software. He produces artwork that is a nuanced understanding of how the computer and technology impact contemporary cultural habits and attitudes, which is connected to his interest in how people receive, process, and filter constant visual information. The LAVC Art Gallery will be open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Parking is available for the general public in Parking Lot B and C. The EOPS/CARE Office is asking the LAVC community to "CARE for Kids" this holiday season by donating a gift to the child of a CARE student.  Construction Notification—Partial Closure of Fulton Avenue & Parking Stalls in Lot A

From November 28-December 9, 2011, there will be a partial closure of Fulton Avenue and 48 student parking stalls on the south end of Parking Lot A between the hours of 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This closure is necessary due to work involving the Parking Lot A Los Angeles County storm drain tie-in. The eastern half of Fulton Avenue will be closed as shown on the attached map as well as Student Parking on South end of Parking Lot A during the time specified. LAVC Theater Arts to Present Reckless on November 30-December 3

LAVC Child Development Department and Family Resource Center to Hold a "Village Family Services" Thanksgiving Food Drive

LAVC Child Development Department (CDD) and Family Resource Center (FRC) will hold a Thanksgiving Food Drive from now-November 22 to assist "Village Family Services" with providing Thanksgiving meal packages for families living in poverty who come from homes of abuse and neglect. They will be collecting any canned or boxed food, including vegetables, stuffing mix, gravy, boxed potatoes/rice and $5 grocery store gift cards to help purchase a turkey. Food donations may be dropped off at the FRC or CDD in the Child Development and Family Complex, or in the ASU Office in the Student Services Center, 2nd Floor before Tuesday, November 22.  LAVC Theater Arts Production of "Spring Awakening" Ends November 19

The LAVC Theater Arts Department will perform "Spring Awakening" on November 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m., and November 19 at 2 p.m. in the Horseshoe Theater. Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, it concerns teenagers struggling with the changes brought by their awakening sexuality. The Broadway production of this show received eight 2007 Tony Awards, including best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, while its London production won four Olivier Awards. This production is directed by LAVC Professor Cathy Pyles. LAVC Celebrates Academic Achievement at the Fall 2011 Dean's Reception

The LAVC Associated Student Union and Tau Alpha Epsilon will celebrate the academic success of students at the Fall 2011 Dean's Reception on Monday, November 14 from 1 p.m. in Monarch Hall. This semiannual event recognizes outstanding students who have made the Dean's List and President's Honor's List as of the Spring 2011 semester. Students selected to the Dean's List are full-time students with at least a 3.5 GPA in 12 or more units at LAVC, or part-time students with at least a 3.5 GPA in 6-11 units who have completed more than 12 cumulative units at LAVC. Students who have been on the Dean's List for three consecutive semesters are selected to be on the President's Honor's List. In addition, all students with a 3.5 GPA or higher are eligible to be a member of the Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society for 2-year colleges, and Tau Alpha Epsilon, LAVC's honor society. You're Invited to the Opening Reception for the LAVC Art Gallery's Latest Exhibition "Dane Picard, Selected Works"

The LAVC Art Gallery will present an opening reception for its latest exhibition entitled "Dane Picard, Selected Works" on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition, which runs from November 9-December 15, comprises of 37 selected works by Dane Picard and focuses on the last ten years of the artist's unique process in digital media. Picard has been working with digital media since the 1980s, experimenting with early computer and animation software. He produces artwork that is a nuanced understanding of how the computer and technology impact contemporary cultural habits and attitudes, which is connected to his interest in how people receive, process, and filter constant visual information. During the exhibition, the LAVC Art Gallery will be open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Parking is available for the general public in Parking Lot B and C. LAVC in partnership with Project GRAD LA is hiring tutors for the following LAUSD Schools: Pacoima, San Fernando, Maclay, and Olive Vista Middle Schools. Tutors will earn between $11.04-$13.25 per hour. To be eligible to be a tutor, students must be attending college full-time (at least 12 units) with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  LAVC to Offer a GED Practice Test on November 4

The LAVC CalWORKs Office will offer a GED (General Educational Development) Practice Test on November 4 from 8:45 a.m. - 12 noon; the cost of the practice test is $10. The practice test is open to the public (no appointment necessary), and the additional practice test dates are November 4, December 2, 9 and 16. As an official GED Testing Site, the LAVC CalWORKs Office also offers the GED Test throughout the year. The next GED Test will be offered on Friday, November 18 from 12 noon - 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 19 from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Registration for that test date will be open starting on November 7 at the CalWORKs Office in Bungalow 14. The GED testing fee is $150 and the partial re-test fee is $35 per subject; all fees must be paid at the time of registration. Space is limited.  LAVC Diversity Committee to Hold a Special Viewing and Discussion of the "Bullied" Documentary on October 25

The LAVC Diversity Committee, in collaboration with the Gay & Straight Alliance ("GSA"), will host a viewing of the documentary "Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case That Made History" with a discussion on Tuesday, October 25 from 1:30-2 p.m. in the Student Services Center, Multi-Purpose Room (2nd Floor). "Bullied" is a documentary film that chronicles one student's ordeal at the hands of anti-gay bullies and offers an inspiring message of hope to those fighting harassment today. Following the viewing, there will be a questions and answers session with the GSA. Seating is limited so come early. Light refreshments will be served. The LAVC Study Away Program will hold its first information session for its 2012 Summer in Paris Program on Saturday, October 22 from 12 noon-2 p.m. in the Foreign Language 102. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation, the California Media Arts Statewide CTE Program, IDEAS – Institute for Developing Entertainment Arts and Studies, and the LAVC Media Arts Department will hold a media arts career event entitled "Meet the Pros" on Saturday, October 16 from 12 noon-4 p.m. in Monarch Hall. There will also be a special preview of the production on Wednesday, October 12 at 8 p.m. This production of Oscar Wilde's deliciously subversive and sparklingly silly comic masterpiece is a reprise of LAVC's 2011 Summerfest production. Jacquelyn Hams Invited to Speak at the Geological Society of America’s Upcoming Annual Meeting
Jacquelyn "Jackie" Hams, chair of the LAVC Earth Science Department, has been selected to speak about Geoscience Education during the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America on October 9-12, 2011 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She will be making a presentation entitled "Creating Lab Tracks to Accommodate Diverse Student Populations in an Introductory Laboratory Class at a Two-Year College" as part of the GSA's Session on Geoscience Education IV: Geoscience for All—Addressing Challenges in Open Door Institutions and/or Small Geoscience Programs. Zev Garber, professor emeritus of Jewish Studies, will be giving a talk on the topic "That Jesus Cover" at the UCLA Center for Jewish Studies. His talk, which will be moderated by UCLA's William Schniedewind, will examine how even though there is a consensus that Jesus lived and died a faithful Jew, there are ramifications of that for Jews and Christians. American Guitar Society to Hold a "Guitar Concert" at LAVC
The LAVC Music Department and the American Guitar Society (AGS) will present a "Guitar Concert" by Classical Guitarist Cameron O'Connor on Saturday, October 8 at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall (Music 106). Cameron O'Connor recently graduated from the Julliard School and has been a top prize winner in six international competitions. Dennis Reed to Speak at Tacoma Art Gallery

Dennis Reed, dean of Fine and Performing Arts at LAVC, has been invited to speak about "Independent & Daring: Women Photographers of the West Coast, 1900-1965" at the Tacoma Art Gallery in Tacoma, Washington. His talk will focus on a few of the most notable women photographers during the first half of the 20th Century, including Virna Haffer and some of her West Coast contemporaries, and the interesting bodies of work they produced while living self-sufficient lives that were sometimes unconventional. Free U.S. Naturalization Information Session to be Held at LAVC

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in partnership with the LAVC Citizenship Center will provide a free naturalization information session for legal permanent residents and interested naturalization applicants on Tuesday, September 27 from 10-11:30 a.m. and 11:30 am-1 p.m. in Monarch Hall. Topics covered at each session will include the naturalization process, the naturalization test, rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship, and a mock naturalization interview. Former LAVC TAP Student Receives a UCLA Scholarship

Eleanor Karen Ryngler, a former LAVC TAP (Transfer Alliance Program) student who recently transferred to UCLA, has been named as a Wasserman TAP Scholar at UCLA for the 2011-2012 academic year. Transfer students who are selected as TAP Scholars are entitled to an academic scholarship of at least $5,000 per year. The scholarship is renewable for a second year of the student has achieved a UCLA GPA of at least 3.0 (B average), completed 45 units (by Fall 2012), and have participated in or committed to participating in undergraduate research or an off-campus internship.  Ronald Reis Publishes a New Book on the Great Depression and the New Deal
Ronald “Ron” Reis, chair of the LAVC Technology Department, has recently published a new book entitled The Great Depression and the New Deal. This book, which is part of a history set by Chelsea House Publishing, is written for young adults and is earmarked for junior and senior high schools around the country.  LAVC will offer the GED (General Educational Development) Test on September 16-17. Registration for the test begins 2 weeks prior to the test, and space is limited. LAVC Launches PASS to Help Improve Student Success

At Opening Day, LAVC announced the start of a new campus-wide initiative called PASS (Preparing All Students for Success). To help strengthen our strategies to improve student success, faculty, staff, administrators and students across the campus will work more closely together towards the shared goal. Earlier this year, LAVC and the rest of the Los Angeles Community College District were selected to participate in a national consortium of 190-member colleges called Achieving the Dream (ATD). Using the toolbox provided by ATD, LAVC will begin to start using data more effectively to help close the achievement gaps and improve student outcomes. Over the next couple of months, more information about PASS will be shared with the campus.

Parking Lot D Reopens on August 22, and Parking Lot A Reopens on August 25

 

Parking Lot D will open for student and staff parking on Monday, August 22; Parking Lot A is scheduled to be reopen on Thursday, August 25. Both lots were closed for several months to make needed improvements to those parking areas. Parking Lot D was temporarily closed in the Spring and Summer to enable the installation of new parking stalls with new photovoltaic panels, and for repaving and restriping the parking area. Parking Lot A was renovated to make improvements to the traffic flow in the lot, add additional parking spaces, create a new pedestrian walkway to the Metro stop on Fulton Avenue and Burbank Boulevard, and to install new parking lot lighting and new blue light emergency phone stations to ensure safety on campus. Rebecca Stein has been elected as the department chair for the new Anthropology Department. As department chair, Rebecca will oversee the department’s course offerings, faculty and budget. The Anthropology Department is focusing this year on instituting improvements based on course assessment results, growing its online offerings, and continuing to integrate the use of new technology, tools and specimens into the human evolution lecture and laboratory courses. William Wallis Publishes a New Book and Has Accepted Editorial Duties for Two

 

Regional Publications

 

William Wallis, professor of English at LAVC, has recently published a new book titled Images, and has accepted editorial duties for Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies and West Magazine. His new book Images, which features his daughter’s photography along with his poetry, was published by Lone Wolf Editions in July 2011. William also sits on the editorial board for Shofar, the official journal of the Midwest and Western Jewish Studies Association, and works with Editor Zev Garber, professor emeritus of Jewish Studies at LAVC, to vote on issues related to the quarterly publication. In addition, he has evaluated full-length submissions at Purdue University Press, and recently recommended that a new volume on contemporary Klezmer Music in Europe be accepted for publication in the Shofar Publications Series. He may also edit a volume on Music and Song Literature of the Sefardim. At West Magazine, William assists Chief Editor Nuala Linke-Ivic, who is formerly of the LAVC English Department and now works at West Los Angeles College, with selecting poetry submissions for publication, and has a column of poetry which appears in each issue.

Eight LAVC Faculty Members Help the Next Generation of Instructors by Mentoring Project MATCH Interns

LAVC faculty members Eric Swelstad (Media Arts), Arantxa Rodriguez (Media Arts), William Wallis (English), Alfred Zucker (English), Abraham Hoffman (History), Nathan Palencia (Philosophy), Cynthia Travelbee (Psychology) and Art Cherdack (Psychology) are mentoring interns who are interested in teaching at the community college-level through the Project MATCH (Mentors Act To Change History) Program. This instructional development program coordinated by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) prepares and recruits prospective faculty members who meet certain criteria by providing him/her with a valuable internship/mentoring opportunity with current faculty members. Each intern is assigned a mentor that matches his/her particular subject area, will be assigned to work with the mentor to teach a 3-unit class, and will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the various responsibilities of faculty. By participating in this program, it may lead to a career as a full-time community college instructor, counselor or librarian for the interns.

Clive Gordon

Introducing the New Director of the Career/Transfer Center – Clive Gordon

As of July 1, Clive Gordon assumes the duties of the director of the Career/Transfer Center. As director, he is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Career/Transfer Center, working with college and university transfer admission representatives, and coordinating the college’s annual career/transfer fair. Clive takes over for Dr. Synthia Saltoun, former director of the Career/Transfer Center, who recently retired earlier this year. LAVC Named As a Leading Degree Producer for Asian Americans

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education has named LAVC as one of the “Top 100 Degree Producers of Asian American Associates: All Disciplines Combined”. During the 2009-2010 academic year, LAVC awarded a total of 81 associate degrees to Asian Americans.Each year, the publication ranks institutions by the number of degrees it confers to minority students, which are based on the U.S. Department of Education reports submitted by each institution.

John Milligan Selected to be a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry

John Milligan, department chair of Chemistry/Physics, has been recently selected to be a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry is the largest organization in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences. Supported by a worldwide network of members and an international publishing business, the Royal Society of Chemistry’s activities include education, conferences, science policy and the promotion of chemistry to the public. Congratulations to Barbara Goldberg—New Chair of the Counseling Department

As of July 1, Barbara Goldberg is serving as the new chair of the LAVC Counseling Department. As department chair, Barbara will oversee and coordinate the services offered by the Counseling Department. She is looking forward to making the Counseling Department be as efficient as possible. One of her departmental goals is to focus on student access in spite of the limited counseling staff. She also hopes to incorporate more technology into its services by expanding the department’s Web page, and adding an online counseling option for students. Attention Students! The LACCD Student Information System Temporarily Not Working

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Student Information System is temporarily not operational. This system, which LAVC students use to access their student information, was shutdown due to an issue at the District Office. The shutdown impacts all students at the nine colleges in the LACCD. Attention Campus Community!! Don't Forget About the Closure of Interstate 405 from July 16-17

From July 16-17, Interstate 405 between the Interstate 10 and the 101 Freeway will be closed; the I-405 freeway will reopen on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 5 a.m., and all ramps and connectors will be reopened by 6 a.m. This stretch of I-405 is being closed to enable the demolition of the Mulholland Bridge as part of the Interstate 405 widening project. To help ease traffic during this time, Metro has information available on alternate travel routes from the Westside to the Valley, and will be offering special transit service, which includes extra buses on major Westside and Valley streets, free fare on Red, Purple and Orange and selected bus lines, and added Metrolink trains. Hispanics

The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine has named LAVC as one of the “Top 50 Community Colleges For Hispanics – Five-Year Comparison Degrees Granted To Hispanics” in 2011. This recognition was bestowed to the top community colleges in the nation for their success in granting associate degrees to Hispanic students. Did You Know? LAVC Changed its Shared Governance Structure to One Council with Six Subcommittees

At the Joint Council Retreat on June 23, LAVC approved a new shared governance structure. Five Students in the Math Department Received Scholarships

The Math Department congratulates its five scholarship recipients who were honored at the department luncheon on June 3 at The Odyssey. The Math Department awarded four departmental scholarships, and three foundation scholarships. The following students received scholarships: Ian Jones, the recipient of the Leon Marzillier Scholarship for $250, Eberth Quezada, the recipient of the Hawkinson Memorial Scholarship for $500, the Iyer Memorial Scholarship for $250, and the Math Department scholarship for $500, Peter Rees and Edgar Dolukhanyan, the recipients of a Math Department scholarship for $300 each, and David Song, the recipient of a Math Department scholarship for $500. LAVC is now an Official GED Testing Center

Los Angeles Valley College is pleased to announce our newly approved Official GED Testing Center. CalWORKs will offer the Official GED Test (starting in the Fall 2011 semester) once every month except in December. Testing is available on-campus to all students and members of the community. CalWORKs also offers free practice testing for the GED every Friday. For more than sixty years, the GED Tests have broadened the educational, professional, and personal opportunities of millions of adults who were not able to complete their formal high school education. LAVC Speech Team Named as an Honoree for the Steve Allen Excellence in Education Award

The Valley Economic Alliance recently selected the LAVC Speech Team as an honoree for the 2011 Steve Allen Excellence in Education Award. The team was recognized for winning a Team Gold Medal at the 2011 Phi Rho Pi, National Public Speaking Championship Tournament. The LACCD Metro Pass Program is being discontinued due to the fact that the funding for the program has ended. There are no current plans to continue with I-TAP program on any of the nine LACCD campuses, including LAVC. If you would like to continue to ride the Metro this fall, you can apply for the standard College/Vocational Pass, which offers a reduced-fare pass to qualified applicants for only $36 per month. LA Valley College to Offer Only Courses for Special Programs This Summer
LAVC announces that the only classes to be offered this summer will be those that are part of special or year-round programs. Enrollment in summer classes will be extremely limited, and only students who are eligible to take those special or year-round program classes will be given an add card directly from the instructor. LAVC students are encouraged to look for available classes at other area colleges. The Cooperative Education Program will offer a few classes this summer, which are open to the public, but students will need to obtain an add card from the instructor in order to enroll. Two faculty members in the LAVC Art Department, Jamison Carter and Phung Huynh, are featured artists in local art exhibitions. The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) recently announced that Amber Barrero, a student at LAVC, was named the winner of the Student Trustee Election. Zev Garber, professor emeritus of Jewish Studies at LAVC, recently was invited to speak at a panel discussion at Purdue University, which was held in celebration of the launch of his latest book entitled “The Jewish Jesus: Revelation, Reflection, Reclamation.” This new book is a collection of essays that cover the historical, literary, liturgical, philosophical, religious, theological and contemporary issues related to the Jewish Jesus.  Construction Update on the Current Renovations to Parking Lot A 
Since April 2011, Parking Lot A and half of College Road South has been closed for renovations. Students, faculty and staff who look at the lot today will see that the pavement has been removed in preparation for the upcoming improvements to the lot.

The lot is being remodeled to add additional parking spots, create a pedestrian walkway to the Metro Bus Stop, and install new lighting to ensure safety on campus. The Southland Regional Association of Realtors is accepting applications for its “Young Real Estate Pros Scholarship”.
Only LAVC students who are currently enrolled in real estate classes with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The LAVC Art Gallery and Arts Council presents a free art exhibition entitled “A Fine Day’s Work: Photographs from the Michael R. Whalen Collection” from April 5-May 12 in the LAVC Art Gallery. This exhibition consists of over 100 vintage photographs created between 1895 and 1988 by eighteen renowned photographers. All of the prints are drawn from the private collection of Michael R. Whalen, which uniquely features all the photographs by an artist taken during a single photographic session. The exhibit is open to the public. These workshops for the Spring 2011 semester will focus on specific groupings of careers, and students will be able to hear from professionals working in those fields. The following workshops will be offered: “Careers in Education” on March 15, “Careers in Business” on March 22, “Careers in Healthcare” on March 29, “Careers in Law” on April 5, “Careers in Green Careers” on April 12, “Careers in Human Services” on May 3 and “Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math” on May 10.  Learn How to Make Good Food Choices at the Nutrition Workshop on May 11 
The LAVC Student Health Center will offer an nutrition workshop entitled “Make Good Food Choices: No Matter Where You Choose to Eat” on Wednesday, May 11 from 11 a.m.-12 noon in the Student Services Center, Multipurpose Room.
Nutrition students from CSUN will share pointers on how to make good food choices. This workshop is open to students, faculty, and staff.
