LAVC Speech & Debate and Strengthening Working Families Project Honored by the Valley Economic Alliance

Congratulations to the LAVC Speech & Debate Team and the Strengthening Working Families Project at LAVC for being awarded Steve Allen "Excellence in Education" Awards, and to LAVC staff member Alex Ojeda on receiving the "Business/Education Partnership" Award for his work at CSUN from the Valley Economic Alliance.

LAVC Speech & Debate and Strengthening Working Families Project Honored by the Valley Economic Alliance

The Valley Economic Alliance recognized several LAVC students and an alumnus with its Steve Allen "Excellence in Education" Awards, and an LAVC employee for his work with a CSUN with a "Business/Education Partnership" Award at its Board of Governors' Meeting on May 16 at the Galpin Motors in North Hills. 

The following awards were presented to LAVC students, alumni and college program by the Valley Economic Alliance:

  • LAVC students Ronnell Evans, Ben Flores, Sarahi Flores, Moriah Giglia, Jagger Godarzi, Khamani Griffin, Mahin Hossain, Kim Luke, DeLorean Thomas, and Chris Williams, along with team coaches Kevin BriancescoDr. Joe Faina, Arthur Valenzuela, and Jamie Morgan of the LAVC Speech & Debate Team received Steve Allen "Excellence in Education" Awards. The team was recognized for its members earning 5 individual gold, 2 individual silver, 7 individual bronze medals, and the Bossard-Twohy Award for best debater at the Phi Rho Pi National Speech Competition in Daytona Beach, Florida.
     
  • The Strengthening Working Families Project at LAVC received a Steve Allen "Excellence in Education" award. This project was recognized for being a top 10 workforce development program in the nation as a Bellwether Award Finalist by the University of Florida College of Education.
     
  • LAVC staff member Alex Ojeda accepted the "Business/Education Partnership" Award for his work with the CSUN Mentoring to Overcome Struggles and Inspire Courage (MOSAIC) Mentoring Program and John R. Wooden High School. This award is presented to an outstanding business in the community that has partnered with a San Fernando Valley School. Alex is the executive director of the CSUN MOSAIC Mentoring Program, and works at LAVC as the coordinator of the Guardian Scholars and UPNEXT programs for current and former foster youth.

In addition, it also recognized the Granada Hills Charter High School Academic Decathlon Team with a "Steve Allen 'Excellence in Education" Award for its national win, and Iain Lambert from iLEAD North Hollywood received its "Innovation in Education" Award.  

Since 2000, the Valley Economic Alliance has recognized and awarded at annual Steve Allen “Excellence in Education” Awards to outstanding K-12 students, Adult Education Centers, higher learning institutions, and educators who have received a national education recognition. This award was named after Valley resident and legendary entertainer Steve Allen, and salutes nationally recognized achievements in the education field. The awards are presented annually by The Valley Economic Alliance and Steve Allen’s son and TVEA board member Bill Allen.
