LAVC Speech Team Receives the Steve Allen Excellence in Education Award

Congrats to the LAVC Speech Team for being recognized with a Steve Allen "Excellence in Education" award by the Valley Economic Alliance. The team was honored for its team bronze, and the 3 individual gold, 1 individual silver and 12 individual bronze medals, and the Warren-Dahlin Student Fellowship Award to Maia Gaboian at the 2017 Phi Rho Pi National Speech Competition.

LAVC Speech Team Receives the Steve Allen Excellence in Education Award

The Valley Economic Alliance recognized the members of the LAVC Speech Team with a 2017 Steve Allen "Excellence in Education" Award at its Board of Governors' Meeting on May 18 at Goodwill Industries in Panorama City, California. 

The 14-member Speech Team was recognized for earning a team bronze, and the 3 individual gold, 1 individual silver and 12 individual bronze medals at the 2017 Phi Rho Pi National Speech Competition. In addition, it recognized Maia Gaboian for receiving the Warren-Dahlin Student Fellowship Award at the competition.

The following individuals on the team were recognized:

  • LAVC students Vahan Aslanyan, Angela Brutyan, Ronnell Evans, Agatha FerasBen Flores, Sarahi Flores, Maia Gaboian, Khamani Griffin, Angel Hernandez, Mahin Hossain, Sergio Martinez, Aleksandr Nasibyan, Amy Lynn Perea, and DeLorean Thomas.
     
  • Team coaches Kevin Briancesco, Dr. Joe Faina, and Arthur Valenzuela.

The Valley Economic Alliance also presented Steve Allen "Excellence in Education" Awards to the Granada Hills Charter High School Academic Decathlon Team for its win at the 2016-2017 Academic Decathalon Nationals, the CSUN Mechanical Engineering Team 1 for its wins at the 2017 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Human Power Vehicle Challenge, Team "Togo" from North Hollywood High School the national champions of the CyberPatriots IX National Youth Cyber Defence Competition, and third-grade teacher Erica Rood of the Chime Institute's Schwarzenegger Community for her 2016 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching.

The event also presented the "Innovation of Education" Award to Dr, Michael Spanga, dean of CSUN's Michael D. Eisner College of Education, the "Champion of Education" Award to Bernardine Pregerson from Pierce College, and the "Business and Education Partnership" Award to Northrop Grumman and the Reseda High School Alpha Team.

Since 2000, the Valley Economic Alliance has recognized and awarded the annual Steve Allen “Excellence in Education” Awards to outstanding K – 12 students, Adult Education Centers, higher learning institutions, and educators who have received a national education recognition. This award was named after Valley resident and legendary entertainer Steve Allen, and salutes nationally recognized achievements in the education field. The awards are presented annually by The Valley Economic Alliance and Steve Allen’s son and TVEA board member Bill Allen.
