LAVC Faculty & Staff Recognized with Above & Beyond Awards and Apple Awards

Congratulations to Hasmik Arakelyan, Luke Davis, Tim Dundore, Barbara Goldberg, Francie Hurwit, Michelle Lewis on receiving a 2017 Above and Beyond Award, and to Hasmik Arakelyan, Jason Beaton, Duane Smith, Eugenia Sumnik-Levins, and Susan Vo on receiving a 2017 Apple Award!

LAVC Faculty & Staff Recognized with Above & Beyond Awards and Apple Awards

LAVC faculty and staff were recognized for their contribution to the campus community and to Valley College student at the 2017 Ice Cream Social on May 10. 

The annual event recognizes employees who have given 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of service (as of July 2016) in the Los Angeles Community College District, newly tenured faculty, newly retired faculty and staff, and new employees. In addition, the college presented the 2017 Above and Beyond Awards, a peer-nominated employee award for outstanding work in one of five categories, to the following individuals:

  • CREATIVITY & INNOVATION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Michelle Lewis
    The nominee was the primary person who created and/or initiated a new idea or concept, resulting in the implementation of an educational program, staff development activity, fundraising effort, cultural event, or any other project that brought positive regard to student success.
    • The nominees in this category were Hasmik Arakelyan, Holly Batty, Andres Cruzalegui, Francie Hurwit, Barbara Goldberg, Meredith Leonard, Michelle Lewis, Nona Matatova, Ellie Rabani, and William Wallis.
       
  • COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & MONARCH PRIDE Luke Davis
    Through the nominee’s individual efforts (not part of their job or position), she or he, increased and/or enhanced the image of L.A. Valley College through volunteerism, community outreach, or any other type of proactive community participation that demonstratively raised awareness of the work and mission of the L. A. Valley College.
    • The nominees in this category were Hasmik Arakelyan, Yasmin Aviles, Luke Davis, Tim Dundore, Meredith Leonard, Ellie Rabani, and William Wallis.
       
  • JUST DO IT! Tim Dundore
    In an unusually difficult, emergency, or significantly challenging situation, the nominee rose to the occasion by exhibiting courage, perseverance, grit, and fortitude for the good of the College community and student success.
    • The nominees in this category were Hasmik Arakelyan, Yasmin Aviles, Tim Dundore, Jim Fenwick, Barbara Goldberg, Jennifer Guevara, Everette Jackson, Meredith Leonard, Duane Martin, and Ellie Rabani.

  • OUTSTANDING SERVICE & MENTORING TO STUDENTS Hasmik Arakelyan
    Any single or continuous act by the nominee (not part of their job or position), affecting one or more students, that significantly enhanced educational outcomes, personal growth, and/or career goals.
    • The nominees in this category were Hasmik Arakelyan, Jessica Araujo, Yasmin Aviles, Holly Batty, Eileen Brodsky, Andres Cruzalegui, Trish Gonzalez, Louis Jones, Meredith Leonard, Israel Ortiz, Ellie Rabani, Sally Raskoff, Cheryl Stoneham, and William Wallis.
       
  • FULFILLING THE COLLEGE’S MISSION TOWARDS STUDENT SUCCESS Barbara Goldberg & Francie Hurwitt
    Any single or continuous act by the nominee (not part of their job or position), that furthered the College’s Mission to advance a student’s education, personal development, quality of life, or empowered students to be productive and engaged members of the global community.
    • The nominees in this category were Hasmik Arakelyan, Holly Batty, Meghan Cason, Andres Cruzalegui, Luke Davis, Francie Hurwit, Barbara Goldberg, Reginald Hubbard, Meredith Leonard, Cyndi Maddren, Courtney Marquez, Ellie Rabani, Nancy Ramsey, Jessica Ruiz, and William Wallis.

This year, the 2017 Apple Awards were presented to outstanding faculty members by Tau Alpha Epsilon (TAE). The Apple Awards is a student-run awards process coordinated by TAE to allow students to show their appreciation of LAVC faculty. The five 2017 Apple Awards were presented to the following faculty members:

  • BEST ALL-AROUND EDUCATOR — Eugenia Sumnik-Levins
  • BEST COMMUNICATOR — Susan Vo
  • MOST INSPIRING EDUCATOR — Duane Smith
  • MOST ACCESSIBLE EDUCATOR — Jason Beaton
  • STANDOUT EDUCATOR — Hasmik Arakelyan

The annual Ice Cream Social event is co-sponsored by the LAVC President's Office, Academic Senate, Faculty Guild 1521, Staff Guild 1521A, LAVC Foundation, Teamsters/Local 911, and SEIU 721.  The 2017 Above & Beyond Awards are a employee-nominated award program coordinated through the LAVC President's Office. 

Tau Alpha Epsilon (TAE), which is the oldest club at LAVC, is an inter-disciplinary student honors club (that is open to Valley College students with a 3.3 GPA or higher) that focuses on community service projects. The Apple Awards are a student-run awards process coordinated by TAE to allow students to show their appreciation of LAVC faculty.
