Monarch Monday Memo—Women's Basketball Heads to the CCCAA Tournament

Women's Basketball (WSC East Division Champs) beats Riverside in the playoffs to earn a seat at the CCCAA Tournament to play Ventura on March 4 at 7 p.m.; game will be streamed live. Also, congrats to Women's Basketball's Diamond O'Connor for being named WSC East Player of the Year, and Lydia Pope, Emily Chan, Yolanda Ealy and Rebecca Islas for being named to the WSC All-Conference.

Monarch Monday Memo—Women's Basketball Heads to the CCCAA Tournament

The LAVC Athletics Department congratulates Monica Hang, her staff, and the Women's Basketball team on its California Community College Athletic Association's (CCCAA) playoff victory at home over Riverside College on February 24; the Western State Conference (WSC) 2017 East Division Championship team advances to the third round of the CCCAA Tournament to play Ventura College on March 4 at Ventura College.

Athletics congratulates Women's Basketball's Diamond O’Connor for being named WSC East Player of the Year, named to All-State 2nd Team, and voted the 7th best player in Southern California. In addition, it commends Women's Basketball sophomores Lydia Pope, Emily Chan, and Yolanda Ealy and freshman Rebecca Islas for being named WSC All-Conference players.

The following is an update on each team's record and upcoming games for the week of February 13-19:

  • Baseball (1-16) will host Bakersfield College in a conference game on Tuesday, February 28 at 2 p.m. at home. They also play at home on Thursday, March 2 at 2 p.m. versus LA Mission, and at home again versus Cuesta College on Saturday, March 4 at 12 noon. All home games are played in the LAVC Baseball Field.
     
  • Men's Basketball. No update.
     
  • Women's Basketball (23-6) were crowned the WSC 2017 East Division Champions, and finished the conference with a record of 9-1. Diamond O’Connor was named WSC East Player of the Year, and was named to All-State 2nd Team and voted the 7th best player in Southern California. In addition, sophomores Lydia Pope, Emily Chan, and Yolanda Ealy and freshman Rebecca Islas were named WSC All Conference Players. The team won the playoff game at home against Riverside College on Friday, February 24, and will now advance to the third round in the CCCAA tournament, to play Ventura College, at Ventura College, on Saturday, March 4 at 7 p.m. The game will stream live on the So Cal College Sports1 You Tube Channel.
     
  • Softball (0-7) will make up their home game with San Bernardino, on Thursday, March 2 at 3 p.m, in Valley's Softball Field. The team will then play two games at Fullerton College on Saturday, March 4 at 12 noon and 2 p.m.
     
  • Men's Swimming & Diving and Women's Swimming & Diving have their first conference WSC swim meet #1, at College of the Canyon, on Saturday, March 4, where they will be competing with COC, Bakersfield, Santa Monica, and Santa Barbara, starting at 10 a.m. 

The LAVC Athletics Department's Monarch Athletics program comprises of 10 intercollegiate athletic teams. The Men's Football, Women's Soccer, and Men and Women's Water Polo teams play every fall. Spring team sports include Men's Baseball, Men's and Women's Basketball, Women's Softball, and Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving.
