LAVC Child Development Professor Speaks at the 2016 National Family Child Care Institute

Dr. Elmida Baghdaserians was invited to speak on the importance of cultural sensitivity at the National Association for Family Child Care's annual conference called the 2016 National Family Child Care Institute in San Diego.

LAVC Child Development Professor Speaks at the 2016 National Family Child Care Institute

Dr. Elmida Baghdaserians, professor of child development at LAVC, was invited to speak at the National Association for Family Child Care's (NAFCC) annual National Family Child Care Institute on July 8 in San Diego.

In her workshop, titled "Cultural Sensitivity: Why it is an Important Part of Our Profession?", focused on helping new teachers develop skills in the following areas: communicating with families of diverse backgrounds, helping children and adults address difficult questions or comments about differences , self reflection, and creating a community of learning that promotes differences. Her talk was part of the conferences "Serving Diverse Populations" track of workshops.
 
The four-day annual NAFCC conference brought together educators and advocates of family child care to discuss topics to better meet the needs of families and help improve the skills of family care educators.
 
Dr, Baghdaserians is also the department chair of the LAVC Child Development department. She is well-regarded speaker in the child development field, and has spoken at a number of conferences including the Education of Young Children (CAEYC) Conference and the Early Childhood Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (ECSTEM) Conference.
