Monarch Memo—Women's Basketball Season Update

Congratulations to the Women's Basketball team for wrapping up a successful season! It finished ranking #8 in So Cal and had a 21-9 overall with a conference record of 10-0. Cheer on our Monarchs at one of these home games: Softball plays San Diego Mesa on April 16 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and West LA on April 19 at 2:30 p.m., and Baseball plays LA Mission on April 17 at 2:30 p.m.

Monarch Memo—Women's Basketball Season Update

The LAVC Athletics Program congratulates Women's Basketball for its successful 2017-2018 season. The ladies finished the season with an overall record of 21-9, and a conference record of 10-0. The team was ranked #8 in Southern California and lost in the 2nd round of playoffs. 

The following is an update our Monarch Athletic teams, and their scheduled games for April 16-April 22:

  • Men's Baseball (13-20, 5-10) plays at home versus LA Mission on Tuesday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. in the Baseball Field, they have a BYE on Thursday, and they play at LA Pierce on Saturday, April 21 at 12 noon. There is free admission at all home baseball games.

  • Women's Softball (19-11, 7-6) has a busy week! They play a non-conference double header at Valley versus San Diego Mesa on April 16 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. They return to conference play on Tuesday, April 17 playing at Victor Valley, and returning home to play West LA on Thursday, April 19 at 2:30 p.m.  They close the week with a game at Long Beach on Saturday, April 21 at noon. All home games are played in the Softball Field, and there is free admission.

  • The Men's Swimming and Women's Swimming will attend the WSC Swim championships at Bakersfield College this weekend (on Thursday,  Friday and Saturday, April 19, 20 and 21). This will determine the conference championships and the individuals and relay teams to qualify for the state tournament!

  • Congratulations to Women's Basketball for a great season. They will have their year-end WBB banquet on Saturday, April 21 at 7 p.m. in the Fireside Room in Campus Center. In addition, the Women's Basketball team had the following accomplishments during the season:

    • Four ladies from last year’s team made it to the 2018 CCCAA Academic All-State. To earn this award, each student have to maintain a cumulative gpa of 3.5 or higher. Grades are calculated from Fall-Spring and if you a sophomore or transfer, it’s your entire transcripts.
    • The team won the WSC East Division Championship. It was the only team for men or women in the Western State Conference (South, North, and East) to go undefeated. 
    • Rebecca Islas was named Player of the Year for the WSC East Division
    • Farrah Castillo, Serene Tyus, and Janelle Jiron earned WSC East Division First Team All Conference 
    • Coach Hang and her staff was named Coach of the Year for the WSC East Division
    • Rebecca Islas earned CCCAA Southern California First Team All State. (She is easily ranked top 5 in the State)
    • The team is expected to have 3-5 student athletes make the 2019 CCCAA Academic All State Team next year.
    • Three student athletes will continue their basketball career at the next level. 
    • Rebecca Islas earned an athletic scholarship to Cal Poly Pomona, Farrah Castillo earned an athletic scholarship to University of Winnipeg in Canada, and Danielle Sokolgz who is part of the Military Tuition Assistance will attend CSULA. 
    • Jillian Wyman who is currently a 4.0 GPA student will transfer to DePaul University. Emmy Pham will most likely transfer to CSU of Fullerton. 

The LAVC Athletics Department's Monarch Athletics program comprises of 10 intercollegiate athletic teams. The Men's Football, Women's Soccer, and Men and Women's Water Polo teams play every fall. Spring team sports include Men's Baseball, Men's and Women's Basketball, Women's Softball, and Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving.
