          STUDENT'S COMMENTS

The students talk back:

Emma Arevallo "I never realized the importance of education until I came to Los Angeles Valley College and enrolled in the CalWORKs program three years ago. Since then, my life totally changed. I started taking ESL classes, and once I learned English, I became a full time student majoring in Child Development. While in college, I was on the Dean’s list (honor student) for two consecutive semesters and received scholarships. I worked two years in Child Development as a program assistant through the CalWORKs Work-Study program. Last year, I obtained an Associate of Arts degree, and I plan to transfer to California State Northridge in 2006. I would like to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Child Development and become a teacher. Currently, I am working as a teacher’s assistant at Erwin Street Elementary School. I believe in having a goal. I had many difficult moments but I never gave up. I had the CalWORKs staff to assist me with my issues, and they encouraged me to continue my education and training. I believe in myself and I am happy about my achievements. You can do it, too."

"I am pursuing my goal to become a nurse. I had the privilege of Sheri Hall
coming to LAVC, receiving assistance through CalWORKs… LAVC students, if you need help with buying your books or counseling services, apply for CalWORKs and Financial Aid. These departments will be glad to help you."

"It never occurred to me that I could be a UCLA student,” said Rosa, who graduated magna cum laude with a 3.7 grade point average and degree in sociology. “It’s a dream come true that I never dared to dream. In a couple of years, I’m going to be in a place where I can give back what has been given to me."

      - - Rosa, a former CalWORKs participant, has started a full-time job and transferred to UCLA.
