Verizon Literacy Champion
and Sean Astin Scholarships
The National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) provides the Verizon Literacy Champion Program, which was established in 1998. The Verizon Literacy Program has raised millions of dollars for literacy programs across the country. It is a comprehensive national campaign of philanthropy, customer outreach, employee participation, and corporate partner collaboration. It is designed to reach nearly 92 million Americans who have serious problems with literacy.
NCFL is honored to have the commitment of Sean and Christine Astin as Verizon Literacy Champions. They are assisting NCFL in advocating for family literacy issues across the country.
The Verizon Foundation has commited a $30,000 grant to establish the Sean and
Christine Astin Literacy Champion Scholarships, which will go to adult learners to attend Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC). Sean and Kristine are alumnus of the college. They announced the scholarship awards at a reception at LAVC on October 22, 2004. Sean and Christine’s roles as NCFL’s Literacy Champion is to help promote the importance of family literacy
services for families in need, as well as encourage businesses and the public to support NCFL through volunteerism and/or donations.
“I play many roles - parent, actor, advocate for literacy – but my most important role is reading to my child," reports Sean. "This is why I am the National Center for Family Literacy’s Verizon Literacy Champion. My role is to encourage parents to create good reading habits in their home - model how to
enjoy good books, read with their children and
make reading a fun activity.“
