             CAREER EDUCATION

Career education allows students the opportunity to take occupational courses while practicing basic skills or participating in part-time employment. This component provides short-term training leading to certificates and AA/AS degrees, and transfer to four-year universities. Business Administration, Certified Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide, Registered Nurse, Child Development, Computer Applications and Office Technology, Computer Science Instructional Technology are vocational programs which are most requested. In addition, job preparation skills are incorporated into the following career education options offered through the CalWORKs program (click on link to learn more):

Healthcare Occupations
Healthcare occupations provide training and recruitment into healthcare positions within the San Fernando Valley to students and incumbent healthcare workers.Health Care Worker Participants are assisted with upgrade positions, from entry level (Medical Assistants) to subsequent levels of Certified Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide, Health Information Specialist or Coder/Biller and Certified Health Unit Coordinator or Certified Coding Associate. Some industry partners include hospitals and private healthcare facilities, as well as WorkSource Center and local community-based organizations. Technical Careers in Healthcare is a grant to assist students who desire employment in the healthcare industry.

Los Angeles Valley College Technical Careers in Health Care provides training and advanced job opportunities for individuals who are TANF recipients, low-income, or currently working. The goal is to enhance participants’ career options in the health care industry. The program provides the following training options:

Health Information Specialist (Unit Secretary) Leading to Health Unit Coordinator Certification
Successful completion of a 30-week training program enables participants to become key members of a healthcare team. They learn how to enhance the delivery of patient care, relieve the nurse of clerical duties, maintain patient medical records, use various communication equipment, relay messages, serve as a receptionist, schedule patient appointments, transcribe physician orders, and maintain supplies.

To further their training, participants are assisted in preparing for the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators (NAHUC) Certification. They can obtain employment at agencies, such as The Center at Park West, Country Villa, and Sherman Village Health Center.

Coder/Billers Leading to Certified Coding Associates
Successful completion of a minimum 20-week training program prepares participants to consult medical classification manuals to assign a special code to each diagnosis and procedure and to use computer programs to gather and analyze data to help improve patient care and control costs. After earning their skills certificates, participants can obtain employment with Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Northridge Hospital Medical Center, and other agencies.

To enhance their progress, participants are assisted in preparing for the Certified Coding Associate examination to become nationally certified by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

All eligible participants will have the opportunity to continue their studies to obtain Computer Applications Office Technologies (CAOT) Certificates or AA degrees in Business Management or Nursing. In addition, they will receive support services including books, supplies, uniform, transportation, child care, and financial aid, as well as academic, vocational, and personal counseling.

Employment Survival Skills/Certified Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide
The Employment Survival Skills and Certified Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide program component is a three-pronged design, which prepares entry-level students for a career in the Health Care profession. The three-component nursing program includes Employment Survival Skills, a Certified Nurse Assistant certification, and a Home Health Aide certification. The program enables students to attain Certified Nurse Assistant and Home Health Aide State licenses.

The Employment Survival Skills (ESS) is the first of the three-component program. The 32-hour section focuses on topics that prepare the student for entry into the workforce. The component stresses ethics, expanding communication skills, increasing self-esteem, overcoming employment obstacles, constructing resumes, and building successful work habits. The program provides the students with the practical tools and skills for success in the work place.

Health Care WorkerThe Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) is the second component of the program. The California State-mandated curriculum involves a total of 282 hours learning theory and participating in clinical settings and skills labs. In 12 weeks, the student learns the roles and responsibilities of a CNA, including 16 modules, like Patients Rights, Patient Care Skills/Procedures, Vital Signs, and Emergencies Procedures. Successful completion enables the student the right to sit for the California State written and skills examination and to begin working .

The Home Health Aide (HHA) is the final component and completes the 20-week program. Students participate in 64-hour of theory and clinical. The HHA centers on preparing the student to take care of clients appropriately in their home. Topics address issues with home safety, nutrition in the home and working with home health agencies in the community. Completion of Home Health Aide adds an additional license for the successful student and an expansion in workplace employment. The HHA further increases the student’s ability to command increased hourly wages.

Upon completion of a 20-week training program, successful participants receive California Certified Nurse Assistant and Home Health Aide Licenses. Excellent employment opportunities are available at The Center at Park West, Country Villa, and Sherman Village Health Center. Participants may continue their studies to obtain a Registered Nurse (RN) degree.

Computers in the Workplace
In order to prepare students for the requirements of the current world of work, the CalWORKs provides students with computer experience. An open-entry computer workshop enables students to learn everyday office procedures; enhance business vocabulary; office professionalism; and how to type and use computer programs, such as Windows 98, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, and the Internet.
