Conferences
The Writing Center's staff believes writing is a process with definite stages including invention strategies, idea generation, evidence gathering, outlining, thesis statement development, draft writing, revision, and polishing of final copies. We can help with any kind of writing assignment through individualized feedback and interactive practice with attentive tutors in a comfortable setting. You may bring in homework assignments, study questions, essay topics, and reading materials from any class you are taking at Los Angeles Valley College. The Writing Center tutorial staff will help you brush up on your study skills, your grammar, your vocabulary, and your essay formatting. Our tutors will aid you in setting up research papers with correct summarization, quotations, and citations. The staff will also help you to learn to analyze assigned reading and interpret teacher's instructions. All LAVC students who are actively enrolled and provide both their Registration Receipt and LAVC student ID are eligible for one conference with a writing consultant per day. (This does not apply to a subsequent or previous visit to H102.) Upon completing the one-to-one conference with a Writing Consultant, students may continue working on their assignment independently for as long as they like.
Group Tutoring When there is more than one student in the same class, students can have group tutoring. During group tutoring, the same process takes place as in one-to-one tutoring except in group tutoring students can discuss their assignment with their classmates along with the tutor. We encourage students to come with their classmates because collaborative tutoring is more effective in terms of comparing notes and ideas. We also suggest students have their class notes, textbooks, and syllabi. Final Note In order to take part in one-to-one conferencing, group tutoring or the Roundtable Workshops, students must bring their LAVC student ID card and current Registration Receipt each time they visit The Writing Center. |
