LAVC Guardian Scholars Program Receives $31,000 in Grants

NextUp Guardian Scholars logoThe Anthony & Jeanne Pritkzer Foster Youth Initiative has recently awarded the LAVC NextUp/Guardian Scholars program with a $25,000 grant. In addition, the Pritkzer Initiative's Foster Care Counts has awarded a $5,000 grant plus an additional $1,000 for student scholarships through the LAVC Foundation. The funds will be used to help support current and former foster youth at Los Angeles Valley College. First Batch of Old LAVC Bungalows are Demolished on Campus

Bungalow 50-52 Demolition - December 2018LAVC finally waved goodbye to a few of its old 1950s bungalows on campus. Bungalows 50-52 were torn down in December 2018 to make way for a new thermal energy storage tank on campus. Dr. Endrijonas climb into a bulldozer to ceremoniously mark the beginning of the removal of the college's now-abandoned bungalows. A crowd of faculty and staff gathered in Lot H, and cheered once the bulldozer began leveling the bungalow structure to the ground. The remaining bungalows in the area are scheduled to be demolished at a later date. Read more on the LAVC News Blog.

 

Faculty & Staff Donate to Needy Families at the LAVC Holiday Party

Holiday Party 2018 Costume Contest WinnersLAVC faculty and staff got into the holiday spirit at the "Grinch-Mas" themed Winter Wonderland Holiday Party on December 4. More than 170 faculty and staff donated $430 as well as a mountain of toys to "Operation: Santa", which brings holiday presents to low-income families in the San Fernando Valley. This annual event brings together faculty and staff to enjoy the joys of the holidays with a tasty holiday lunch, raffle prizes, and to see who wins the annual musical chairs competition. This year, it also included a "Grinch-Mas" costume contest. Read more on the LAVC News Blog.

Introducing Luiza Minasyan, LAVC's Brand New Graphic Designer

Working under Professional Development, she will assist with college-wide projects as well as assist college departments and programs with various graphic design and promotional projects. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CORNER 

Get Ready for the Strength Finders Workshops, TechFest, and More this Winter!

The Professional Development department is putting the final touches on several projects and upcoming activities. 

Classified staff has the opportunity the participate in our Strengths Finders workshop on Friday, January 18 starting at 8:30 a.m. in Monarch Hall.  In order to participate, each person will need to have take the online Strengths Finders Inventory; check your campus email for instructions on how to log into the Inventory.  We will spend the morning with Dr. Joe Darin, who is a certified Strengths Finder trainer. Lunch will also be provided for those attending. It will be a great morning of learning and engaging with co-workers! Be sure to take the Inventory before the January 11th deadline, and join us! 

The Leadership team at LAVC will be going through Strengths Finders Leadership training on the afternoon of Thursday, January 17

The Teaching Innovations Academy has just launched an online training titled TIA-Express, The Art of Instruction.  It begins January 7th and runs through February 1st.  This online class includes training on pedagogical strategies, engaging students with technology, and course design.  A mini redesign project is required for flex credit.  This course will be facilitated by Sally Raskoff and Rebecca Stein.  You can register at bit.ly/LAVCTIAE2019Jan.

Be sure to SAVE THE DATE for our upcoming Tech Fest, January 28th and 29th.  The agenda for those two days will be coming out soon.  If you would like to join us for lunch during Tech Fest, be sure to RSVP to profdev@lavc.edu.  We still have openings for lunch!

Looking ahead, we are excited about the launch of the B.U.I.L.D. Series in February.  The BUILD Series will feature a book group discussions, lectures, and related videos along with discussion.  All employees are invited to attend all of the sessions around our featured book, or you can pick and choose the ones you would like to attend.  We anticipate each BUILD Series will last about two months with different activities announced as we meet.  Our first book will be Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein. . This book relates to both everyday life and our transition into Guided Pathways.  Join us for this first B.U.I.L.D. experience!
