Suzan-Lori Parks's Fucking A presented by the Valley Collegiate Players

The LAVC Theater Arts Department's Valley Collegiate Players presents Fucking A by Suzan-Lori Park on July 12-14 in the LAVC Horseshoe Theater in the Theater Arts building.

Fucking A is one of Parks's Red Letter Plays that riffs on Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel The Scarlet Letter. The Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright reimagines Hawthorne's character of Hester--but here her A stands not for Adulterer but for Abortionist.

Set in "a small town in a small country in the middle of nowhere," a bleak world plagued with dreams and nightmares that feel all too familiar, Fucking A is the story of a single mother whose son was imprisoned as a boy for stealing a piece of meat from a rich family. To avoid imprisonment herself and to earn a chance at seeing her son again, Hester has reluctantly taken up the occupation of Abortionist.

Fucking A runs for only three performances, and seating is limited for the following performances:

  • Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m. in the Horseshoe Theater in the Theater Arts building

  • Saturday, July 13 at 7 p.m. in the Horseshoe Theater in the Theater Arts building

  • Sunday, July 14 at 7 p.m. in the Horseshoe Theater in the Theater Arts building

The cast, creative staff and production team of Fucking A are all LAVC students. The cast includes Kiziana Jean-Louis, Nancy Garcia, Ava Lange, Harut Simonian, Charlie Castaneda , Charisma Carrillo, Lara Blanco, Taylor Gottbetter, Manvel Gezalyan, Martin Guardado, Jason Beltran, and Matthew Hawkins.

It is directed by Enver Messano, with scenery designed by Cole Castine, costumes by Stephanie Morales, lighting by Briaz Vasquez and properties by Shnayor Zalman Heidingsfeld. The production stage managing team is comprised of Joshua Esquivel, and assistant stage managers Kathie Ramos and Gerardo Ceja.
