“InSight: Mission to Mars” Astronomy Lecture

The LAVC Earth Science Department and the Los Angeles Valley College Astronomy Group is offering a "InSight: Mission to Mars" with special guest speaker Dr. Sharon Kedar, seismologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), on Sunday, September 16 at 7:45 p.m. in the LAVC Planetarium.

Early in the morning of May 5, a bright light traveled quickly across the sky, disappearing in the Southwest. It was not a UFO, but NASA's InSight Lander, which was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Scheduled to land on Mars in November, this lander will put a seismograph on the surface to listen for "Marsquakes". Learn more about this fascinating mission from Dr. Sharon Kedar, who is the seismology co-investigator on the InSight lander mission.

The talk is open to the public, and admission is free.

The LAVC Astronomy Group, which is part of the LAVC Earth Science Department, conduct several public events each month for its members, LAVC students and the public. The LAVC Earth Science Department offers courses in the disciplines of astronomy, environmental science, geography, geology and oceanography.
