Introduction to Teaching with Canvas (Face-to-Face) Training Session

LAVC Distance Education Office is offering Introduction to Teaching in Canvas trainings for faculty in Winter Session 2018 and the Spring 2018 semester.

In accordance with Article 40b of Local AFT 1521, an instructor must demonstrate LMS proficiency by receiving certification in the Learning Management System. Faculty using Canvas for an online or hybrid class, must be certified.

The following is a schedule Introduction to Teaching with Canvas training sessions are being offered during Winter 2018 and Spring 2018:

Introduction to Teaching with Canvas
The introductory Canvas Training will provide an overview of the basic tools in Canvas and prepare you for your online class. You will have access to a shell, learn the features of Canvas, and engage in actual exercises. In order to become certified, you must successfully complete the course with a score of 80% or more. Certification must be completed no later than seven (7) calendar days prior to the first day of the semester.

The following are the three delivery options for the training:

  • Online (Moderated)
    Two or three-week online class, facilitated by a trainer.

  • Face-to-Face
    One-day session, plus an additional week to complete exercises.

    • Thursday, January 11 from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. in Library Academic Resources Center (LARC) 201

    • Thursday, January 18 from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. in Library Academic Resources Center (LARC) 201

    • Thursday, January 25 from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. in Library Academic Resources Center (LARC) 201

    • Friday, March 23 (date change from March 3) from 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in in Library Academic Resources Center (LARC) 201

  • Self-Paced
    Ongoing, at your convenience, but registration is required.Classes are limited to 20 students. Registration is required for all Canvas Training except the Drop-In Help sessions.

    • ​Starts on Monday, January 8 and must be completed by the end of Spring 2018

Please Note: If you have used Canvas at another school, you do not need to take the LAVC training. However, you need to provide the DE Coordinator access to your website from the other school so she can confirm that you have taught using Canvas. Contact the DE Coordinator at distanceed@lavc.edu.\

The training sessions are wheelchair accessible. If you require a sign language interpreter, assistive listening device, large print, braille materials, or any other accommodations, please contact Dave Green, Associate Dean, Services for Students with Disabilities at greendn@lavc.edu at least 5 days prior to the event.
