The Purpose of the Curriculum Committee

The Valley College Curriculum Committee (VCCC) acts as an advisory body to the Academic Senate. The VCCC recommends policies concerning curriculum and related matters to the Academic Senate. The VCCC also works with discipline faculty to prepare curricular proposals related to courses and programs and recommends these proposals for approval to the Academic Senate.

Timing of the Curricular Cycle

The Curriculum process has many steps, depending on the type of proposal. Most proposals take a full year from when they are first submitted to VCCC technical review to when they can be offered in the course schedule. Some proposals requiring District and/or California Chancellor’s Office approvals may take longer. In general:

Curricular items approved by VCCC in Fall 2019:

  • Will be effective in the 2020-2021 Catalog

  • Can be scheduled in Fall 2020

Curricular items approved by VCCC in March 2020 Meeting:

  • Will be effective in the 2020-2021 Catalog

  • Can be scheduled in Spring 2021

Curricular items approved by VCCC after March 2020:

  • Course Outline updates without changes to District-wide attributes* will be effective in the 2020-2021 Catalog and may be scheduled in Fall 2020

  • Course Outline updates without changes to course requisites** will be effective in the 2020-2021 Catalog and may be scheduled in Fall 2019

  • Course Outline updates with changes to course requisites** will be effective in the 2020-2021 Catalog but may NOT be scheduled until Spring 2021.

  • The VCCC may approve other types of proposals (TAP, DE, TBA, Combine Classes, Advanced Classes) but these will be effective and be scheduled with the same timing as proposals approved in Spring 2021.

*District-wide attributes are elements of the course outline that are common to all campuses in the district. These include Course Subject, Course Number, Title, and Units.

**Requisites include all pre-requisites, co-requisites, and advisories.

Instructions for all curricular proposals can be found via the Forms link to the left.

Los Angeles Valley College and its departments have made every effort to maintain accurate web pages and may change general information, courses, or programs offered.  Changes may be made for the following reasons: student enrollment, level of funding, or other issues as determined by the College or the Los Angeles Community College District.  Consult the current LAVC Catalog for program and course information.
