Classes Outside Regular Department Structure Subcommittee (CORDS)

Background

The Accreditation definition of Community Services/Extension or programs is a flexible program of educational, cultural, social, and recreational services developed with reference to the accepted functions and purposes of the college, and to continuing surveys of the needs of the supporting community.

According to Education Code Section 78300, Chapter 6, Article 7, "The governing board of any community college district may, without the approval of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges, establish and maintain community service classes in civic, vocational, literacy, health, home-making, technical and general education, including, but not limited to, classes in the fields of music, drama, art, handicraft, science, literature, nature study, nature contacting, aquatic sports and athletics. These classes shall be designated to provide instruction and to contribute to the physical, mental, moral, economic, or civic development of the individuals or groups enrolled therein."

At Los Angeles Valley College these are typically short-term, self-supporting, not-for-credit course, classes or programs.

This subcommittee was established to address issues raised by the establishment of courses, classes or programs offered through Community Services/Extension Program.

Mission

The mission of the CORDS subcommittee is to ensure that short-term, self-supporting, not-for-credit classes and programs are developed with reference to the accepted functions and purposes of the college.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Review and make recommendations to the Curriculum Committee regarding Community Services/Extension proposals where objections have been raised.
  • Hear arguments in favor of and against the proposal.

Principles for Review

All courses, classes and programs proposed by Community Services/Extension are to be appropriate to the mission of the college. They include courses, classes and programs that are educational, cultural, social, and recreational services developed to meet the needs of the supporting community.

Criteria for Review

  • Overlap: All courses, classes and programs should not overlap in content with a major portion of a course already offered by an academic department.
  • Community Need and Interest: It is important the courses, classes and programs contribute to the goals of the participants and that there is community interest in the particular area.
  • Collaborative: Programs that combine credit and not-for-credit classes should be developed with collaboration of the Director of Community Services/Extension and the respective Department Chair.

Procedures for Review

  • New courses, classes and programs that are developed through the Community Services/Extension programs are circulated, via memo, from the Office of Academic Affairs to all Department Chairs, Administrators, Academic Senate President and Curriculum Committee Chair for review and comment. The proposals are to include, title, length of course, class or program and a description.
  • If there are no objections to the proposal, it is accepted. Objections to any proposal must be lodged with the Vice President of Academic Affairs or the Curriculum Committee Chair within ten (10) days, and it is referred to the subcommittee for review.
  • Proposals are reviewed based on the above criteria. Hearings are held if appropriate.
  • Recommendations are forwarded to the Curriculum Committee.
