LAVC Monarch Spirit Dance Team

LAVC Monarch Spirit Dance Team is a group of dancers/cheerleaders working together to promote school spirit and represent Valley College at athletic games and events.  The team performs jazz, hip-hop and pom routines during timeouts & halftime and leads the crowd in cheers & chants throughout the games.  Team members are enrolled in a cheerleading class where they learn dance technique, as well as the cheers & routines they will perform at the games.

What kind of a commitment is it?
Participation in the team is a year-long commitment that requires hard work, dedication and the ability to work with others.  Therefore, punctual attendance is mandatory at all practices and scheduled events.  Excessive tardiness and absences will have consequences including performance suspension and a lowered grade in the “cheerleading” class.  All further expectations and policies will be reviewed after the team has been selected at which time all squad members must sign the participation agreement.  Please take note of the following commitments before deciding to audition for the LAVC Monarch Spirit Dance Team.

  • All spirit squad members must be enrolled in the Summer 2011, Fall 2011, Winter 2012, and Spring 2012 cheerleading classes.
  • Mandatory practices will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 6:30pm – 9:30pm starting August 1st, 2011 and ending on June 1st, 2012 (with the exception of all school holidays, Thanksgiving break, Winter break, and Spring break).
  • Squad members perform at all home and away football games.  Football games are generally on Saturday evenings and require a commitment from 2pm -9pm on that day (unless more/less time is needed to travel or kick-off is at a time other than 6pm).

Football games are on the following Saturdays:
September 3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th
October 1st, 15th, 22nd & 29th
November 5th & 12th

  • Squad members perform at all men’s and women’s home basketball games.  Basketball games are generally on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Many of them are “double-headers” (a women’s game followed by a men’s games) and require a 5-hour commitment.
  • All squad members will be required to attend a 24-hour Retreat/Bootcamp to be set on August 6th & 7th or August 13th & 14th.

Please note: the main focus of the team is to support LAVC, improve dance technique, and perform.  It has not been decided if competitions will be a part of the schedule next year.

How much does it cost?
LAVC has done a lot of fundraising in the past in order to make the team affordable.  Each member must buy their own shoes and briefs.  Members may then choose to rent their uniforms, warm-ups, poms, and bag from the school for a small fee or purchase them for themselves.  The total cost to be on the team ranges from approximately $110 to $415 depending on what you choose to do.
