Virgil Watson
Head Coach

“For every player, there is a pathway to success,” explains basketball coach Virgil Virgil WatsonWatson. “My job is to help them find and navigate it.”

In his sixth year as head coach of the Monarchs, Watson has an impressive background, having served successful tours as a collegiate assistant coach with Pasadena and Ventura. He also served as head coach at Palomar, Contra Costa, and Ventura. Additionally, he was a key staff member at Cal State Northridge. At Ventura College, Watson led the team to the state championship.

“I want my players to be in a position to reach their goals both on the court and in the classroom,” Watson says. “They have a golden opportunity to pursue their dreams; my job is to help show them the way.

“On the court, we work on the up-tempo game we like to play. It’s an aggressive style that is well-suited to display their talent to visiting coaches and scouts. That’s part of the reason the universities have enjoyed getting players from my program.”

Watson owes much of his player’s success to his style of helping them excel at what they do best. “We recognize their strengths and try to enhance them,” he explains. “In the end,” Watson concludes, “I want each player to be proud of the time he spent here at Valley College. They should be fully prepared mentally, physically, and emotionally to succeed at the next level and beyond.

Watson makes his home in Granada Hills with his wife, Maria.
